Elion Cancer Research Award Philadelphia, April 6, 1999 Yue Xiong, Ph.D., is the recipient of the seventh Gertrude B. Elion Cancer Research Award, sponsored by the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR). Begun in 1993, the award is presented annually to one non-tenured scientist at the level of Assistant Professor engaged in meritorious basic or clinical research in cancer causation, prevention, or treatment. Tumor Suppression by the RB and P53 Pathways Cell, Nature, EMBO, and Molecular and Cellular Biology , and last-authored works in Genes and Development, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Cancer Research, Cell Growth and Differentiation, and Cell Dr. Xiong earned his doctorate in molecular biology in 1989 at the University of Rochester, in Rochester, New York, where he stayed one year as a postdoctoral fellow. He then moved to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Cold Spring Harbor, New York, where he began his work on the mammalian cell cycle and evolutionary analysis of retrotransposeable elements as a post-graduate fellow under the tutelage of Dr. David Beach, Ph.D. Dr. Xiong researched in Cold Spring Harbor until 1993 when he began his Assistant Professorship at Lineberger Cancer Center in Chapel Hill. The AACR is pleased to sponsor this annual award for young investigators in the name of the late Gertrude B. Elion, D.Sc., Nobel Laureate, distinguished Past President and Honorary Member of the AACR. The research award is supported by an educational grant from Glaxo Wellcome Oncology in honor of Dr. Elion who was Scientist Emeritus at Glaxo Wellcome until her sudden death in February 1999.

Elion, Gertrude B. I was born in New York City on a cold January night when the water pipes in our apartment froze and burst. Fortunately, my mother was in the hospital rather than at home at the time. My father emigrated from Lithuania to the United States at the age of 12. He received his higher education in New York City and graduated in 1914 from the New York University School of Dentistry. My mother came at the age of 14 from a part of Russia which, after the war, became Poland; she was only 19 when she was married to my father. My first seven years were spent in a large apartment in Manhattan where my father had his dental office, with our living quarters adjoining it. My brother was born about six years after I was, and shortly thereafter we moved to the Bronx, which was then considered a suburb of New York City. There were still many open lots where children could play and large parks, including the Bronx Zoo, to which I was very much devoted. My brother and I had a happy childhood. We went to a public school within walking distance of our house. Our classrooms were generally quite crowded, but we received a good basic education. I was a child with an insatiable thirst for knowledge and remember enjoying all of my courses almost equally. When it came time at the end of my high school career to choose a major in which to specialize I was in a quandary. One of the deciding factors may have been that my grandfather, whom I loved dearly, died of cancer when I was 15. I was highly motivated to do something that might eventually lead to a cure for this terrible disease. When I entered Hunter College in 1933, I decided to major in science and, in particular, chemistry.

Elion American Chemist/Nobel Laureate December 8, 1988 at Stockholm Concert Hall, Stockholm, Sweden When I joined the Wellcome Research Laboratories in 1944, World War II was in progress. Since the work I am about to discuss covers a period of some 40 years, it may be pertinent to consider the "state of the art" at that time. Our ultraviolet absorption spectra were measured with a Bausch and Lomb spectrograph which had a carbon arc as the light source and photographic plates for recording the amount of light absorbed at each wavelength. There was no paper or ion-exchange chromatography, and purines were isolated and separated as copper and silver salts, or picrates, by fractional crystallization. Tritium and P were available, but no C or S. Geiger counters were used for counting radioactivity; scintillation counters came much later. Some of the heavy isotopes, e.g., N and C were obtainable but required the use of a mass spectrometer, which few laboratories had. The state of knowledge of nucleic acids was rather rudimentary. We knew they contained purines and pyrimidines, but the sequences were not known. The prevailing theory was that there were two purines and two pyrimidines in each tetranucleotide and that these tetranucleotides were strung together in some fashion. However, the nature of the internucleotide linkage had not yet been established, and the helical structure of DNA had not yet been proposed.
