Magazine Antiques
July, 1998 by Alison C. Dineen Continued from page 1.
A sunnier outlook is found in Edward Penfields depiction of a young woman reading in Harper's June of 1896 [ILLUSTRATION FOR PLATE IX OMITTED]. Influenced stylistically by the French poster makers Jules Cheret (1836-1932) and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), as well as by Japanese prints, Penfield also imbued his posters with a uniquely American sensibility.(14) Simple, tailored clothing with blouses, skirts, and jackets modeled on men's styles gained favor among many young women of the day. Although her pose obscures many details, the clothing worn by the young woman in Plate IX has elements typical of styles worn by women employed as shop assistants, documented by the fashion historian John Peacock as "with a straw boater hat, fitted blouse opening down the front, leg-of-mutton sleeves, flared skirt, and soft leather boots."(15) Between 1900 and 1915 the most popular illustrators, such as Charles Dana Gibson, Howard Chandler Christy, and James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960), were highly paid and recognized celebrities, whose work in popular periodicals was critical to the transmission of attitudes about style and fashion. The so-called Gibson girl came to personify the healthy good looks, cool, dignified demeanor, and fashionable dress of the idealized American woman, and her look was imitated by women everywhere.(22)
