62. Famous People In Medicine
willem einthoven (1860 1927). Dutch physiologist who was awardedthe 1924 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discovery
http://reality-sites.org/people/willem-einthoven.htm
Willem Einthoven
Dutch physiologist who was awarded the 1924 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the electrical properties of the heart through the electrocardiograph, which he developed as a practical clinical instrument and an important tool in the diagnosis of heart disease. Einthoven was graduated in medicine from the University of Utrecht and served as professor of physiology at the University of Leiden from 1886 until his death. In 1903 he devised the first string galvanometer, known as the Einthoven galvanometer; with this instrument he was able to measure the changes of electrical potential caused by contractions of the heart muscle and to record them graphically. He coined the term electrocardiogram for this process. Einthoven recognized differences in the records or tracings obtained from different kinds of heart disease. From 1908 to 1913 he studied the patterns of records of normal heart activity in order to gain precision in recognizing and interpreting deviations. Einthoven continued to develop electrode arrangements, and the present-day standard limb leads were originally described and used by him.

Willem Einthoven
Physiologe, Anatom * 21. Mai 1860 in Semarang (auf Java; heute Indonesien)

Canadian, John Hopps invented the first cardiac pacemaker. Hopps was trained as an electrical engineer at the University of Manitoba and joined the National Research Council in 1941, where he conducted research on hypothermia. While experimenting with radio frequency heating to restore body temperature, Hopps made an unexpected discovery: if a heart stopped beating due to cooling, it could be started again by artificial stimulation using mechanical or electric means. This lead to Hopps' invention of the world's first cardiac pacemaker in 1950. His device was far too large to be implanted inside of the human body. It was an external pacemaker. História
WILLEM EINTHOVEN. DE UM COMEÇO ÁRDUO AO PRÊMIO NOBEL
Rubens Maciel Porto Alegre, RS Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia 66(4):179, 1996 Of the different types of investigation that have been undertaken none has had a more profound effect upon cardiac diagnosis, and none has yielded greater returns than that concerned with the electrical currents produced by the heart-beat. 1 - retrato do autor autografado).

Willem Einthoven, `The father of electrocardiography', introduced a new era in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the heart. For his contributions he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1924.
This volume is the first book in the English language on Willem Einthoven's life and work. It is based in part on the two Dutch reviews by Einthoven's collaborators, De Waart and Hoogerwerff (1957 and 1946, respectively) and Einthoven's own publications. In addition, extensive use could be made for the first time of the Einthoven archive which contains a large correspondence with Dutch and foreign colleagues and friends, along with their evaluations of Einthoven's work and personality.
This book provides an interesting and unique insight into Einthoven's work, his personality, and his relation to his contemporaries. It is also a valuable document about an episode which has been of great importance in the development of modern medicine. Contents Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht
