Op 9 januari 1886 werd hij te Amsterdam tot arts bevorderd. Nog geen twee maanden later hield de 26-jarige Einthoven zijn inaugurele rede over als hoogleraar in de fysiologie aan de Leidse Universiteit. Leiden bezat sinds 1867 een fysiologisch laboratorium, gelegen aan de Zonneveldstraat. Dit werd door Einthoven ingericht als werkplaats voor elektrofysiologie. Aanvankelijk doceerde hij zowel fysiologie als histologie - dit laatste vak was sinds de benoeming van A. Heynsius in 1866 aan de leerstoel toegevoegd en zou in 1906 weer van de leeropdracht fysiologie ontkoppeld en toegewezen worden aan de anatoom J. Boeke. Einthovens eigen wetenschappelijk onderzoek richtte zich ondertussen geheel op de fysiologie, zowel op het gebied van de ademhaling, als het optische systeem en de elektrofysiologie van het hart. Toen Einthoven van 1905 tot 1906 rector magnificus was, zette hij op 8 februari 1906 in zijn diesrede

About Willem Einthoven, The Einthoven Lectures and the Einthoven Foundation Homepage Portal Willem Einthoven The Einthoven Foundation The Einthoven Lectures and The Einthoven Award Willem Einthoven (1860-1927) Willem Einthoven had a long career as professor at Leiden University, from 1886 until his death in 1927. Einthoven's contributions to the field were recognized in 1924 when he received the Nobel Prize . lt is characteristic of his modesty that accepting the prize he pointed out that the development of electrocardiography had only been made possible by concerted efforts of many workers in this field, among whom he especially mentioned his British friend, Thomas Lewis. THE EINTHOVEN FOUNDATION The Einthoven Foundation was established in 1979. The board of the Einthoven Foundation and its international advisory board now make proposals for potential recipients of the Einthoven Awards. One of the Major activities of the Einthoven Foundation is the organization of congresses and seminars in which recent developments in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and related areas are placed in historical perspective. The Einthoven Lectures are generally part of those meetings but on special occasions the lectures are held separately. Programs are planned to stimulate young investigators who perform original clinical and fundamental research related to the heart and blood vessels. The Einthoven Foundation also encourages the publication of scientific or otherwise enlightening material that may, in a broad sense, serve the preservation of the history of developments in the field of cardiology.
