NOW OUT IN PAPERBACK The Einstein File
It's widely believed that Einstein was the "father of the atom bomb." In fact, readers of Fred Jerome's new book The Einstein File will discover that the scientist was barred from working on the bomb, as a security risk by J. Edgar Hoover's FBI and US Army officials. It was part of Hoover's secret, 23-year campaign to undermine Einstein's influence, a campaign that included illegally opening the scientist's mail, monitoring his phone, trying to link him to Soviet spies, and trying to take away his American citizenship - a campaign detailed for the first time in The Einstein File . The book, published in May by St. Martin's Press, also brings to light evidence that Hoover was working with or duped by pro-Nazi elements in Germany and the US. After three years of FOIA efforts, Jerome succeeded in obtaining virtually the full FBI file on the world's most famous scientist. (In a 1983 version released by the FBI more than 25% of the file was withheld or blacked out.) From the Book Jacket: Using material newly obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, Fred Jerome weaves information from Einstein's almost two-thousand-page FBI file with the history of the period to create a spy-story-like narrative that also explores Einstein's political dimension.

165. Einstein's Compass - This Gift May Have Launched The Genius Of Albert Einstein
What is it that triggers a spark of genius? For five year old albert einstein, it might well have been the gift from his father of a simple magnetic compass.

Einstein's Compass
This gift may have launched the genius of Albert Einstein By: John Shepler What is it that triggers a spark of genius? Is there some encouragement given at the right time that starts the process or helps it along, or does genius simply find its expression despite all odds? Young Albert was a quiet boy. "Perhaps too quiet", thought Hermann and Pauline Einstein. He spoke hardly at all until age 3. They might have thought him slow, but there was something else evident. When he did speak, he'd say the most unusual things. At age 2, Pauline promised him a surprise. Albert was elated, thinking she was bringing him some new fascinating toy. But when his mother presented him with his new baby sister Maja, all Albert could do is stare quizzically. Finally he responded, "where are the wheels?" When he was 5 years old and sick in bed, Hermann Einstein brought Albert a device that did stir his intellect. It was the first time he had seen a magnetic compass. He lay there shaking and twisting the odd contraption, certain he could fool it into pointing off in a new direction. But try as he might, the compass needle would always find its way back to pointing in the direction of magnetic north. "A wonder," he thought. The invisible force that guided the compass needle was evidence to Albert that there was more to our world that meets the eye. There was "something behind things, something deeply hidden."

EINSTEIN'S MIRACULOUS YEAR:

Five Papers That Changed the Face of Physics

edited by John Stachel.
Princeton University Press, 216 pages,
I 'VE often been struck by the fact that philosophy students read Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, political-science majors read the U.S. Constitution, and literature classes read Shakespeare, but students of science rarely read the works of Mendeleev or Lavoisier or Einstein. The widely used college textbook from which I learned mechanics, the area of physics whose foundations were laid largely by Isaac Newton, contains a beautiful exposition of classical mechanics but only a handful of mentions of Newton, no excerpts from his Principia, and no pages at all on the history of the subject. From this one observation an intelligent creature from outer space could determine that there exists a profound difference between the disciplines we call natural science and those we call humanities or art or social science. Modern textbooks on science give no sense that scientific ideas come out of the minds of human beings. Instead science is portrayed as a set of current laws and results, inscribed like the Ten Commandments by some immediate but disembodied authority. Discuss this article in

    EINSTEIN'S LEGACY
Although he is regarded as one of the most brilliant mathematical physicists of the century, Einstein thought of himself as much as a philosopher as a scientist. Certainly his theories relating matter, energy, space, time and gravity have guided much of the work in theoretical physics since 1905. His famous "thought experiments," based on intuition and imagination rather than laboratory work, propelled us beyond the mechanistic, unchanging "clockwork universe" of Newton and the other classical physicists into a relativistic universe . Here clocks run slower or faster depending on the speed of travel or location in the universe, and "true" distances are stretched or shrunk by gravity. Einstein's legacy is a universe in which space and time are woven into a single fabric spacetime. It is matter that causes spacetime to curve and whose motion and properties are, in turn, altered by that curvature. If all this seems a bit baffling, relax. With a bit of persistence you'll get the gist.
    Uncertain Beginnings
Einstein's college record as an unenthusiastic student is fairly well known. So, too, his independence and questioning of authority, all of which may have prevented him from landing an entry-level academic position once he graduated in 1900 with a degree in physics. Yet despite this unpromising start, Einstein changed the world through the power of his unconventional imagination.
