Physicist Imagination is more important than knowledge.
Albert Einstein
was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Wurttemberg, Germany. Einstein contributed more than any other scientist since Sir Isaac Newton to our understanding of physical reality. Einstein worked at the patent office in Bern, Switzerland from 1902 to 1909. During this period he completed an astonishing range of theoretical physics publications, written in his spare time, without the benefit of close contact with scientific literature or colleagues. The most well known of these works is Einstein's 1905 paper proposing "the special theory of relativity." He based his new theory on the principle that the laws of physics are in the same form in any frame of reference. As a second fundamental hypothesis, Einstein assumed that the speed of light remained constant in all frames of reference. Later in 1905 Einstein showed how mass and energy were equivalent expressing it in the famous equation: E=mc2 (energy equals mass times the velocity of light squared). This equation became a cornerstone in the development of nuclear energy. Einstein received the Nobel Prize in 1921 but not for relativity, rather for his 1905 work on the photoelectric effect. He worked on at Princeton until the end of his life on an attempt to unify the laws of physics.

Schweitzer Albert * 14. Januar 1875 Kaysersberg (Elsass), † 4.

Einstein, Albert (1879-1955), German-born American physicist and Nobel laureate, best known as the creator of the special and general theories of relativity and for his bold hypothesis concerning the particle nature of light. He is perhaps the most well-known scientist of the 20th century. Einstein was born in Ulm on March 14, 1879, and spent his youth in Munich, where his family owned a small shop that manufactured electric machinery. He did not talk until the age of three, but even as a youth he showed a brilliant curiosity about nature and an ability to understand difficult mathematical concepts. At the age of 12 he taught himself Euclidean geometry.
Early Scientific Publications

The second paper, on the photoelectric effect, contained a revolutionary hypothesis concerning the nature of light. Einstein not only proposed that under certain circumstances light can be considered as consisting of particles, but he also hypothesized that the energy carried by any light particle, called a photon, is proportional to the frequency of the radiation. The formula for this is E = hu, where E is the energy of the radiation, h is a universal constant known as Planck's constant, and u is the frequency of the radiation. This proposal-that the energy contained within a light beam is transferred in individual units, or quanta-contradicted a hundred-year-old tradition of considering light energy a manifestation of continuous processes. Virtually no one accepted Einstein's proposal. In fact, when the American physicist Robert Andrews Millikan experimentally confirmed the theory almost a decade later, he was surprised and somewhat disquieted by the outcome.

When Isaac Met Albert
November 12, 1997: A ntimatter is one of the most recognized and attractive words in science fiction. It's the stuff that drives fictional starships from one side of the universe to the other. Now NASA is giving it serious consideration as a rocket propellant to get around the solar system. A gram of antimatter would carry as much potential energy as 1,000 Space Shuttle external tanks carry. Don't expect to go zipping away at warp factor anything, though. While antimatter may become the fuel of tomorrow, the rockets will employ the ages old action-reaction principle in an interesting meeting of Albert Einstein ( E=mc ) and Isaac Newton ( F=ma The image above, right shows the creation of an electron - positron pair from a photon in a liquid hydrogen bubble chamber in a magnetic field. On Tuesday, Russian scientists were informally invited to join NASA in this venture to produce, store, and use antimatter for medical and construction purposes as well a for space propulsion. The Russians are attending the week-long Science and Technology Advisory Council meeting, a review of scientific research conducted by Russian scientists with NASA funding as part of America's participation in the Mir space station program.

My Saturday Afternoons with Albert Einstein By Ralph D. Gardner Courtesy of the Archives of the Institute for Advanced Study Albert Einstein in his office at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, 1954. Ralph Gardner, 12, on a bench in Washington Square Park, the year 1935 By Ralph D. Gardner Being only eleven at the time, I had no idea that the year I was introduced to Albert Einstein 1934 was among the most crucial in his life. During his visit to the United States, the Nazi government in Germany, where he was born in 1879, confiscated his property and revoked his citizenship. To Einstein, the most prominent scientist of this century and, at the time, an outspoken critic of Adolf Hitler, the German action was no surprise and, on receiving this news, Einstein accepted an offer to join the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he remained until his death in 1955. During my own career in journalism here and abroad I met heads-of-state, military leaders, literary giants and entertainers, but I do not recall a more companionable gentleman than Albert Einstein. Perhaps I was invited to meet him because I could speak German, a result of living with my maternal grandparents. My grandmother and her family arrived from what was then Bohemia when she was an infant. Though English was spoken to others, they conversed in German among themselves. Daily, at mid-morning, the family gathered for coffee at my grandmother’s brownstone, and though little was said to me, I absorbed the language.

Einstein, Albert (1879-1955) German-born Jewish physicist, author of the theory of relativity and Nobel Prize winner. Although his discoveries are not easily understood, they have greatly altered man's view of the universe. Einstein was born in Ulm and grew up in Munich, and later moved to Italy to join his parents. He detested the military discipline of German schools. His interest in mathematics and physics started early. After graduating from the Zurich Polytechnic Institute at 21, he took Swiss citizenship and worked at the Patent Office in Berne. Doing his own private research, in 1905 Einstein published three brilliant scientific papers, including one on relativity, a later generalization of which was to make him world- famous. During World War I, Einstein predicted the deflection of starlight by the gravitational field of the sun; the prediction was proven correct by an expedition during a solar eclipse in 1919.

can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it. albert einstein in albert
http://www.2think.org/einstein.shtml
The following was a message from the ex-tian mailing list I think part of the problem of theists wanting to believe that famous scientists such as Einstein and Hawking believe in their god comes from the common quote: "God does not play dice with the Universe." To those who already wish that Einstein believed in god, Einstein's mere mention of "god" here is all the "assurance" they need. But to truly understand what he meant when he said that, one has to dig further into Einstein's views toward god and religion . Scientists often informally use "god" to mean the laws of nature. In a (non-religious) discussion w/ another xian, I brought up this quote: "Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper." Einstein: The Life and Times , Ronald W. Clark, Page 422. The person's immediate reaction was to say, "yeah, but WHO is the piper?" (Sigh) I don't think these kinds of people are really interested in the true meaning of these quotes, only what parts of them they can use to bolster their cause.

Albert Einstein He studied in Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule in Zuerich (ETH), but could not get a job in any university; so he worked as a patent clerk (photo below) in Bern for a while (1902-1909). After this, he taught at Zuerich (1909-1911), Prague (1911-1912), Zuerich (1912-1914), Berlin (1914-1933), and finally became a professor at Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1932-1955). [Original photo in Albert Einstein Archives, Hebrew Univ. of Jerusalem] While in Bern, he continued his work on physics, and he published three important papers (among others) in 1905. One is the paper on photo-electric effect, proposing his light quanta hypothesis, drawing on Max Planck's quantum hypothesis; and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921 for this work. Another is the paper on special relativity, which brought a revolution in physics in the 20th century. He extended the idea of this paper to dynamics involving gravity; this gave birth to general relativity (1915), in which gravity can be represented by a curvature of spacetime. His two theories of relativity had a great impact upon many fields of human activities.
