Er hatte es im Jahre 1907 in Frankfurt/ Main bei Tausenden von Versuchen entdeckt. Mit seiner 0,3 Gramm leichten "magischen Kugel" gegen die "Weiße Pest", der Syphilis, gab er Hunderttausenden Lebensglück und Gesundheit wieder. 1909 stellte die Firma Hoechst im Auftrag Ehrlichs das Dioxydiamidoarsenobenzol ("606"), ein wirksames Arsenpräparat, das eine möglichst geringe Giftwirkung haben sollte, erstmals fabriktechnisch her. Der japanische Bakteriologe Sahatschiro Hata (1873-1938), Mitarbeiter von Ehrlich, erprobte das Präparat zunächst gegen Rückfallfieber bei Tieren und dann erstmals im Juni 1909 an einem Kaninchen, dessen Hornhaut mit Syphilis infiziert wurde. Here he devised his famous side-chain theory of immunisation. It has since been replaced.
