He became a pacifist and argued for universal fraternity and the rule of law. In 1851 Dunant was impressed by the statement issued by Victor Hugo at the Paris Peace Congress when he predicted that: "A day will come when there will be no battlefields, but markets opening to commerce and minds opening to ideas. A day will come when the bullets and bombs are replaced by votes, by universal suffrage, by the venerable arbitration of a great supreme senate which will be to Europe what Parliament is to England, the Diet to Germany, and the Legislative Assembly to France."

Jean-Henri Dunant and the Red Cross
The Red Cross is an admirable global organization founded by an admirable individual, Jean-Henri Dunant, whose life John Gehl summarizes here: "Swiss humanitarian Jean-Henri Dunant (1828-1910) founded the Red Cross in 1864, and in 1901 shared the first Nobel Prize for Peace in recognition of his Red Cross work, and for his efforts on behalf of disarmament and international arbitration. Dunant was born into a Geneva family that was religious, humanitarian, and civic-minded. In his early years he participated in religious, full-time work as a representative of the Young Men's Christian Association, traveling in France, Belgium, and Holland. At age twenty-six, he entered the business world as a representative of the Compagnie Genevoise des Colonies de Setif in North Africa and Sicily. In 1858 he published his first book, An Account of the Regency in Tunis, which contained his travel observations and a remarkable chapter (later published separately) on slavery among the Mohammedans and in the United States of America. Having personally witnessed the 1859 Battle of Solferino, which resulted in nearly 40,000 casualties, he was so disturbed by the lack of care for the wounded that he acted to organize emergency aid services for the Austrian and French wounded. In 1862 Dunant published "

On June 24, 1859, a young Swiss businessman named Jean Henri Dunant arrived at the village of Solferino in northern Italy. He was horrified by what he saw. A bloody battle had just taken place, with more than 40,000 soldiers killed or wounded. Most of the injured had been left to die in the fields.
With the founding of the Red Cross, Dunant became famous, and was received by heads of state, kings and princes in many countries. Because he was so busy with his Red Cross work, however, Dunant neglected his business and became bankrupt in 1867. The scandal that followed forced him to resign from the Red Cross, and he was no longer welcome among the rich and successful people in Geneva.
For many years he lived in poverty, sometimes sleeping on park benches or relying on help from a few friends. In 1895 he was discovered, penniless and sick, by a journalist in a hospice or long-term care hospital. The journalist wrote an article about him that was printed throughout Europe, and once again he was famous and honoured. In 1901, he received the first Nobel Peace Prize. All of the Nobel Prize money was given to charities after his death.

Dunant, Henri , in full JEAN-HENRI DUNANT (b. May 8, 1828, Geneva, Switz.d. Oct. 30, 1910, Heiden), Swiss humanitarian, founder of the Red Cross (now Red Cross and Red Crescent ), a founder of the World's Young Men's Christian Association, and cowinner of the first Nobel Prize for Peace, in 1901. An eyewitness of the Battle of Solferino (June 24, 1859), which resulted in nearly 40,000 casualties, Dunant organized emergency aid services for the Austrian and French wounded. In (1862), he proposed the formation in all countries of voluntary relief societies for the prevention and alleviation of suffering in war and peacetime, without distinction of race or creed; he also proposed an international agreement covering the war wounded. In 1864, the year he founded the Red Cross, the first national societies and the first Geneva Convention came into being. Having gone bankrupt because he neglected his business affairs, Dunant left Geneva in 1867 and spent most of the rest of his life in poverty and obscurity. He continued to promote interest in the treatment of prisoners of war, the abolition of slavery, international arbitration, disarmament, and the establishment of a Jewish homeland. After he was "rediscovered" by a journalist at Heiden, Switz., in 1895, Dunant received many honours and annuities, including the first Nobel Prize for Peace.
