He and Frédéric Passy were awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize in A man deeply religious in the Calvinist tradition and committed to the principle of "Love thy neighbor," Dunant crisscrossed Europe , lecturing on the evils of slavery . While in Italy in , he visited the site of the Battle of Solferino , where he was stunned by the many thousands of wounded soldiers left on the battlefield to die, without receiving even the most basic medical attention that might have saved them. Upon his return to Geneva he wrote Souvenir of Solferino , a memoir of his experiences in Italy, in which he advocated the establishment of an international network of volunteer relief agencies. The book won the attention of Switzerland's Federal Council and in that country sponsored an international conference to discuss ways to implement Dunant's ideas as he expressed them in the Nine Articles . Sixteen countries attended and by twelve ratified the document, which became the basis for the International Committee of the

Jean Henri Dunant 's life (May 8, 1828-October 30, 1910) is a study in contrasts. He was born into a wealthy home but died in a hospice; in middle age he juxtaposed great fame with total obscurity, and success in business with bankruptcy; in old age he was virtually exiled from the Genevan society of which he had once been an ornament and died in a lonely room, leaving a bitter testament. His passionate humanitarianism was the one constant in his life, and the Red Cross his living monument.
The Geneva household into which Henri Dunant was born was religious, humanitarian, and civic-minded. In the first part of his life Dunant engaged quite seriously in religious activities and for a while in full-time work as a representative of the Young Men's Christian Association , traveling in France, Belgium, and Holland.

Folio, pp. [1], [1], 115, with one double page map (partly colour-printed); lightly browned; a good copy in contemporary cloth-backed boards, original wrappers preserved. FIRST EDITION, PRIVATELY PRINTED IN 1600 COPIES, OF WHICH ONLY 400 WERE ACTUALLY DISTRIBUTED (see En Français dans le Texte, p. 268).
'On 24 June 1859 the Battle of Solferino - one of the bloodiest of the nineteenth century - was fought between the Austrians and the French-Piedmontese alliance. Dunant, a Swiss philanthropist, witnessed the battle and its dreadful aftermath, in which the nearly 40,000 casualties were left to die with no medical treatment except what he and the local inhabitants could provide them. Upon returning to Geneva Dunant published Un souvenir de Solferino, an account of the horrors he had seen coupled with an appeal for "some international principle, with the sanction of an inviolable convention, which ... might constitute a basis for the relief of the wounded in the various countries of Europe." The wide interest generated by Dunant's book led in 1863 to the formation of a committee which later became the International Red Cross, and in 1864 to the establishment of the Geneva Convention. Dunant shared with Frédéric Passy the first Noble Peace Prize in 1901' (Norman Catalogue). Although 1600 copies were printed only 400 were distributed privately, and none offered for sale. 'A month later, in December 1862, Dunant had another thousand copies bound with a title page indicating "deuxième édition." The third edition, in which Dunant suggested the extension of Red Cross services to victims of natural disasters, appeared in 1863. An English translation was published by the American Red Cross in 1939' (Haskell Norman, One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine p. 269).
