The most important discovery was his demonstration that the DNA of a virus is incorporated in the genetic cellular material, almost becoming a gene of the cell, and permanently altering the cell. Another important discovery was that viral genes remaining in the cell start to produce their "messengers", altering and interacting with the cellular DNA activity. These investigations opened up the field of molecular biology of animal and human cells. In 1975 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine together with two of his associates David Baltimore and Howard Temin. In 1972 Dulbecco moved from the U.S. to London, to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratory, where he continued his studies in oncology, setting up a project on the biology of breast cancer using a model system in rats. He then returned to the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, USA where he continued his work on breast cancer. In 1986 Dulbecco proposed the "Human Genome Project" (now being carried out as an International Project in laboratories all over the world), to map the entire genome and to identify some 100 thousand genes which make up the human genomic structure. This will eventually lead to the characterization of every cell of the body through the genes they contain. In relation to cancer, the comparison between the healthy and the cancerous cells could tell us which genes are active in the cancerous ones and are not found in the normal cells, and vice versa. From 1988 to 1992, Dulbecco served as the President of the Salk Institute.

Benchè abbia già raccontato la sua ricca vita in "Scienza, vita e avventura" (Sperling & Kupfer, 1989), il 10 settembre 2002 ha generosamente acconsentito a ripercorrerne alcune tappe salienti con noi a Lugano, nella sua bella casa sul lago. Siete stati molto uniti? Certo. Con Luria ho lavorato negli Stati Uniti per due anni. Con la Levi Montalcini dividevamo l'ufficio a Torino, e per un caso siamo partiti per l'America sullo stesso vapore polacco, che si chiamava "Sovietsky". Là non stavamo lontani, io a Bloomington con Luria e lei a San Louis, per cui ogni tanto ci trovavamo, chiaccheravamo, parlavamo di quello che facevamo. E' stato un gruppo sempre unito anche dopo. The two main groups are academic scientists and industrial scientists. I shall begin by dealing with cooperation and competition among the members of the two groups from the viewpoint of a biologist. For many years, industry has been active in the field of biology. It has produced numerous reagents that are used by investigators. These reagents, however, are also often discovered by academic scientists and used by them. It is a two-way road. Among reagents are enzymes, metabolic precursors, labeled components, and antibodies, whose availability has had a tremendous impact on biological research. It would be inconceivable today for each investigator to be required to make his own reagents. If that were the case, the discoveries of the last two or three decades could have not been made. This is an important example of cooperation between academia and industry, which occurs across national boundaries.

La sua straordinaria simpatia e la sua innata modestia, così come si sono mostrate al festival di Sanremo nel ‘99, lo hanno fatto diventare, di fronte alla pubblica opinione, la voce semplice e al tempo stesso autorevole della ricerca medica. Il progetto Genoma La fama di Dulbecco, oltre che per le sue ricerche sull’interazione tra i virus tumorali e il materiale genetico della cellula che gli hanno fruttato il Nobel, è dovuta soprattutto al Progetto Genoma, di cui è stato propugnatore e fondatore. E’ stata un’idea di Dulbecco, partorita nel 1986, quella di decifrare la mappa genetica dell’uomo e individuare tutti i geni presenti. Un progetto che all’epoca apparve titanico e troppo costoso. E che è stato brillantemente portato a termine qualche mese fa. I compagni di ricerca Salvador Luria e Rita Levi Montalcini sono i due scienziati che Dulbecco conobbe subito dopo la laurea in medicina a Torino. Due incontri che influenzarono moltissimo il suo futuro. Fu la Montalcini a spingere Dulbecco a trasferirsi negli Usa per intraprendere gli studi di biologia e lavorare nella genetica. E l’occasione gli venne presentata da Luria nel ‘49, che già lavorava negli States e che gli offrì un piccolo stipendio per lavorare nel suo gruppo. Dulbecco si innamorò degli Stati Uniti e promise di non tornare più in Italia. Una promessa che ruppe 23 anni dopo.
