Élie Ducommun
Élie Ducommun February 19 December 7 ) was a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize , which he shared with Charles Albert Gobat . Born in Geneva , he worked as a tutor, language teacher, journalist, and editor, as well as a translator for the Swiss federal Chancellery ( ). In he helped to found the Ligue de la paix et de la liberté (League for Peace and Liberty), though he continued working at other positions, including secretary for the Jura-Simplon Steel Company from to . That year, he was appointed director of the newly formed Bureau international de la paix (International Peace Office), the first non-governmental international peace organization, based in Bern . He refused to accept a salary for the position, stating that he wished to serve in this capacity solely for reasons of idealism. His keen organizational skills ensured the group's success. He was awarded in the Nobel Peace Prize in 1902, and served as director of the organization until his death in 1906.

    Having completed his early studies in Geneva at the age of seventeen, he obtained a post as tutor for a wealthy family in Saxony, remaining there for three years and becoming expert in the German language. Upon returning to Geneva, he taught in the public schools for two years and then in 1855 at the age of twenty-two, began his journalistic career with the editorship of a political journal, the . In one way or another he was connected with journalistic enterprises for the rest of his life. In 1865 he moved to Bern where he founded the radical journal, Der Fortschritt [Progress], which was also published in French under the title ; in 1871-1872, he edited ; beginning in 1868, he edited the news sheet, Permanent Peace Bureau , he prepared or edited innumerable appeals, pamphlets, reports, news sheets, and the like for the peace societies and the international peace congresses.
    Ducommun was also a political figure of some consequence. In Bern he was a member of the Grand Council for ten years; in Geneva, prior to his leaving in 1865, he was a member of the Grand Council for nine years, becoming vice-chancellor in 1857 and chancellor of state of Geneva in 1862.
    He was a business executive as well. For thirty years, beginning in 1875, he was secretary-general of the Jura-Bern-Lucerne railroad, or as it was later called after a merger, the Jura-Simplon line. This position required, according to

Dec. 7, 1906, Bern), Swiss writer and editor who in 1902, with Charles-Albert Gobat , won the Nobel Prize for Peace After working as a magazine and newspaper editor in Geneva and Bern, Ducommun spent most of his career as general secretary of the Jura-Simplon Railway. His spare time, however, was spent on peace activities. He took an active part in the movement for European union, editing the periodical of the International League of Peace and Freedom, founded in 1867. In 1889 Ducommun participated in the first of the regular International Peace congresses. Two years later he became honorary general secretary of the newly founded International Peace Bureau. After 1895 he published the bureau's Correspondance bi-mensuelle . In this period Ducommun also wrote a number of works on the peace movement.
