Nobels fredspris

Header = 1; centerContent('H'); Switzerland joined the United Nations in 2002 as its 190th member. This does not mean, however, that Switzerland was previously a stranger to the international club of nations. The credibility created by Switzerland’s permanent neutrality made the country an example of humanity to the rest of the world and a valuable arbitrator in the relations between countries.
By joining the United Nations in autumn 2002, Switzerland became a member of the core UN group and the General Assembly, where it can actively pursue UN concerns, which are also the concerns of Swiss foreign policy: promotion and preservation of peace and security, the protection of human rights as well as humanitarian aid and dialogue.
Through the country’s membership of the UN, Switzerland’s traditional role in the mediation and the resolution of conflicts and representation of interests has assumed a new importance, while still preserving Swiss neutrality.
Since 1984, Switzerland has had observer status in the main bodies of the United Nations. It became a member of almost all the UN special organizations (ILO, FAO. UNESCO, WHO, UNCTAD, UNICEF), as well as of numerous funds, programs (UNDP, UNEP, WFP and UNIFEM) and institutions.

    The Nobel prizes
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made. In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

That year, he was appointed director of the newly formed Bureau international de la paix (International Peace Office), the first non-governmental international peace organization, based in Bern .
