Edward Adelbert Doisy was born at Hume, Illinois, on November 3, 1893. He was the son of Edward Perez and his wife Ada, Alley.
He was educated at the University of Illinois , where he took his A.B. degree in 1914 and his M.S. degree in 1916. From there he went to Harvard University , where he took his Ph.D. degree in 1920.
From 1915 until 1917 he was assistant in biochemistry at Harvard Medical School and from 1917 until 1919 he did war service in the Sanitary Corps of the United States Army. From 1919 until 1923 he was Instructor, Associate, and Associate Professor at Washington University School of Medicine and in 1923 he became Professor of Biochemistry at St. Louis University School of Medicine . In 1924 he was appointed Director of the Department of Biochemistry.
Doisy has been concerned chiefly with biochemical studies of the sex hormones and vitamins K and K . At the St. Louis School of Medicine he worked in collaboration with Edgar Allen on the refinement of the vaginal cytology (or smear) technique for the big-assay of the potency of oestrogenic hormones in ovariectomized rats.
In 1929-1930 he succeeded in isolating oestrone, a feat independently accomplished at about the same time by

Doisy, Edward Adelbert
(b. Nov. 13, 1893, Hume, Ill., U.S.d. Oct. 23, 1986, St. Louis, Mo.), American biochemist who shared the 1943 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Henrik Dam for his isolation and synthesis of the antihemorrhagic vitamin K (1939), used in medicine and surgery. Doisy earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. at Harvard University (1920). He taught at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo. (1919-23), and St. Louis University (1923-65; emeritus 1965-86). From 1922 to 1934 he worked with the embryologist Edgar Allen in developing assay techniques that facilitated research on sex hormones. Doisy and his associates isolated the sex hormones estrone (theelin, 1929; the first estrogen to be crystallized), estriol (theelol, 1930), and estradiol (dihydrotheelin, 1935). Vitamin K, a substance that encourages blood clotting, had been identified by Dam, and in 1936-39 Doisy isolated two forms of the vitamin, determined their chemical structures, and synthesized the vitamin. Doisy's writings include Sex Hormones (1936) and Sex and Internal Secretions (1939), with Edgar Allen and Charles H. Danforth.

Adelbert Doisy and the ‘Jot’ Em Down’ Store
BY ESTHER SHARP SANDERSON.
(Reprinted from Historical Society Newsletter) One hundred years is a long time in the life of man. ADELBERT H. DOISY, who passed away February 1, 1962, came within nine months of reaching the century mark. To span a century means a heap of living. He saw generations come and go and marked time to the onrushing surge of progress. To stay forever young at heart is an attribute to one who loved his fellowman and kept an open mind to economical, political and social change. It was, indeed, remarkable that regardless of time and change, he could still remain a man of the hour. Adelbert Doisy, 1862-1962 When Mr. DOISY came as a hunter to this remote, mountainous vastness, he [had] little thought that he would become an adopted citizen. But when he met the sparkling, beautiful and vivacious LINA WEST, he quickly changed his mind. They were married and from that day on, Mr. DOISY remained a Scott Countian. If the Huntsville Supply Store did not have some article in stock that a customer called for, he could order it for you on the next mail, and he was always as good as his word. He bought every kind of produce from the farmers who were glad to exchange them for "store boughten" things. He always paid the highest possible prices for hides, tallow pelts, molasses honey, chickens, eggs, feathers, wool, mountain herbs, gin sang, yellow root, sassafras, sarsaparilla and numerous other things.
