Doherty, Zinkernagel Win Nobel Prize "The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is very pleased that two of our colleagues in immunology research, one of whom is a long-term grantee, have been awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine," says Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., NIAID director. Peter C. Doherty, Ph.D., an NIAID grantee since 1977, and Rolf M. Zinkernagel, Ph.D., an NIAID grantee in the late 1970s and mid-1980s, received the award today for their discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. "Their observations paved the way for the current understanding of how the immune system recognizes both microbial invaders and the body's own cells," says Dr. Fauci. The two scientists collaborated on their prize-winning research between 1973 and 1975 at the John Curtin School of Medical Research in Canberra, Australia. Dr. Doherty is currently chairman of the immunology department at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and holds the hospital's Michael F. Tamer Endowed Chair for Immunology Biomedical Research. Dr. Zinkernagel is professor and director of the Institute of Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. "Dr. Doherty and Dr. Zinkernagel established that the immune system recognizes microbial antigens in association with self molecules known as major histocompatibility antigens on a cell's surface," says Dr. Fauci. "Not only did their observations reveal how the immune system recognizes microbial invaders, but they also helped us understand, more broadly, how the immune system recognizes a molecule as self or non-self."

To: Jonathan Shier, CEO, Australian Broadcasting Commission
Subject: Reporting science in the visual and audio media
Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2000 18:11:20 -0600 Dear Mr Shier, Over the past 4 years I have used the opportunity provided by winning the 1996 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and subsequent tenure as 1997 Australian of the Year, to speak up for the cause of science, liberal education and intellectual activity in Australia. This has taken a great deal of my time, which could have been used quite productively in other ways. My motivation was that I care greatly about Australia, and do not want to see the country in decline. Australia will become increasingly non-competitive in the international, and even the South East Asian, arena if the research base and the universities are allowed to flounder. During this time I had the privilege of speaking with a number of Australia's business and political leaders, including Prime Minister John Howard. A recurring question was "how do we interest young people in science". It was a pleasure to be able to respond that, at least from the aspect of the ABC, the visual and audio media coverage of science in Australia is at a very high level. There are no better science reporters anywhere than Robyn Williams and Norman Swan. I have regularly seen segments of Quantum on US television, though I understand that Quantum has been effectively gutted by budget cuts over the past year and is now, of course, dead.

"Animal experimentation has been essential to development of all cardiac surgery, transplantation surgery, joint replacements and all vaccinations. The world is not flat." - Joseph E. Murray, M.D., Nobel Prize Winner 1990 Erwin NEHER and Bert SAKMANN - describe chemical communications between cells. Edmond H. FISCHER and Edwin G. KREBS - show cells can adapt pre-existing proteins for a job rather than make new ones from scratch. Richard J. ROBERTS and Philip A. SHARP - show how DNA and individual genes can relate differently in different circumstances. Alfred G. GILMAN and Martin RODBELL - show how individual cells interpret chemical signals, and separately how a chemical, guanosine triphosphate (GTP), enables us to see, smell and taste. Edward B. LEWIS, Christiane NUSSLEIN-VOLHARD and Prof. Eric E. WIESCHAUS – describe genetic control of early embryonic development.

Course Sketch: What is risk? risk management? Risk Management and Objectives: This topic includes how risk management functions are integrated into the individual's or organization's objective function. Risk Assessment Risk Control: This will include some explanation of the notion of risk reduction through pooling arrangements and the initial development of the theory of an insurance firm. This topic would also include default risk, monitoring, regulation, and government guarantees. Risk Finance Risk Markets Supply This topic will include the development of the theory of the insurance firm. It will build on the risk pooling notions and add other activities such as investment. The organizational form will also be considered here, e.g., mutual versus stock companies. Demand This topic may include a variety of different forms of insurance so that the impact of risk aversion may be used to motivate the consumer demand in some lines while taxes, financial distress, agency costs, etc. may be used to motivate the corporate demand. This topic area will also include some of the problems in insurance pricing such as adverse selection and moral hazard problems. The notions of risk reduction and self-insurance will also be included for both the consumer and corporate demands. On the corporate side of the analysis, we will include a comparison of insurance with other financial instruments that are used to hedge risk. The economic functions and impact of major liability rules, e.g., strict liability versus negligence, on the choices made by agents and corporations and hence on the demand for insurance will also be investigated.
