Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Otto Diels The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1950 Otto Paul Hermann Diels was born in Hamburg, Germany, on January 23, 1876. His earliest research was in the field of inorganic chemistry, where he was the discoverer of an oxide of carbon having some unusual properties-carbon sub oxide. His subsequent work was in the domain of organic chemistry. He was responsible for introducing the use of selenium as a specific reagent for the dehydrogenation of hydro aromatic compounds (1927). This proved to be a very useful tool in elucidating chemical structures in the complicated steroid series, where his name is associated with the hydrocarbon 3'-methyl-1, 2-cyclopentenophenanthrene. Diels obtained this skeletal steroid structure by dehydrogenating cholesterol, and other members of the series, with selenium. His best known work was done in collaboration with Kurt Alder on the chemical reaction which bears their joint names (1928). This, sometimes known also as the diene synthesis, consists in the reaction of a diene with a second component which has carbonyl or carboxyl groups adjoining an ethylenic bond, to give unsaturated cyclic compounds. Diels married, in 1909, Paula Geyer. They had three sons and two daughters.

Diels-Alder reaction
The Diels-Alder Reaction is an organic chemical reaction between a conjugated diene and a substituted alkene (commonly termed the dienophile) to form a substituted cyclohexene system. The reaction can proceed even if some of the atoms in the newly-formed ring are not carbon. Some of the Diels-Alder reactions are reversible; the decomposition reaction of the cyclic system is then called the Retro-Diels-Alder. This reaction belongs to a larger class known as 2 + 4 cycloadditions, which are characterized by the formation of a ring by a process involving two pi electrons of one reactant and four pi electrons of the other. Such reactions tend to be especially rapid because the transition state (see activation energy ) involves six pi electrons delocalized around a ring, much like benzene . It therefore has some aromatic character and is particularly stable. By comparison, 2 + 2 and 4 + 4 cycloadditions tend to be much slower. Otto Paul Hermann Diels and Kurt Alder were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1950 for their work on this reaction.

Japanese physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1949 for research in the theory of elementary particles. In 1935, he published a paper entitled On the Interaction of Elementary Particles* in which he proposed a new field theory of nuclear forces and predicted the existence of the previously unknown meson. Mesons are particles heavier than electrons but lighter thanprotons. Encouraged by the discovery by American physicists of one type of meson in cosmic rays, in 1937, he devoted himself to the development of the meson theory, on the basis of his original idea. Since 1947 he worked mainly on the general theory of elementary particles in connection with the concept of the "non-local" field. Proc.Phys.-Math. Soc.Japan
