H.A.Lorentz (1853-1928)

Alfred Nobel died on December 10, 1896, and willed his fortune to set up a foundation to recognise individuals who have contributed significantly to the advancement in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace. The Nobel Foundation was established in 1900 and the first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901. The recipients are commonly referred to as the Nobel Laureates. On the occasion of its 300th anniversary in 1968, the Bank of Sweden (Sveriges Riksbank) made a large donation to the Nobel Foundation to establish a prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel. The first Nobel Prize for Economics was awarded in 1969. The Nobel Foundation CHEMISTRY

Research Interests
My interests are in issues at the interface of environmental science and policy. How do we make use of computer models of complex chemical, biological, and physical systems in the face of uncertainty about the parameters and the models themselves? Can we use this information when we ask questions about the costs and benefits of expected policies? How do nonlinearities and feedbacks affect both the uncertainties and the optimal policy choices predicted by models incorporating them?
Projects and Research
Uncertainty in air quality models
  • Developing a quantitative uncertainty framework for ozone models by which a risk percentile can be assigned to various scenarios.
  • Incorporating questions of reactivity within the above framework.
Socio-Economic conceptual model for the Neuse River Basin

Peter "Pie" Debye was born in Maastricht and after attending local schools in Maastricht went to the Technical University at Aachen Germany , only 30 km from Maastricht, in . He studied mathematics and classical physics , and in received a degree in electrical engineering . In he published his first paper, a mathematically elegant solution of a problem involving eddy currents. At Aachen he studied under the theoretical physicist Arnold Sommerfeld , who later claimed that his most important discovery was Peter Debye. In , Sommerfeld received an appointment at Munich , and took Debye with him as his assistant. He got his Ph. D with a dissertation on radiation pressure in . In he derived the Planck radiation formula using a method which Max Planck agreed was simpler than his own method.
