Charles Gates Dawes house (Evanston IL)
written August 2000 Pros: great house, great city
Cons: it IS a house tour
Follow LSD northwards from downtown Chicago and you come to
civilization, the North Shore, Evanston. Evanston is an
uber-suburb, a district with its own comfortable sense of wealth,
a college town, and an accomplished character actor (because
the best part of Home Alone was the house and the
neighborhood, leafy sidewalks, North Shore all the way). The
older and better neighborhoods are along the lake, row after row
of huge four-story stone chateaux proudly facing each other, with carriage houses behind and all that. I'm not sure why land prices were higher by the lake, since the view is bland in the summertime and bleak in the winter, the wind wicked and mean, the snowfall wet and persistent. Nice to visit, less nice to live there. Alas my incisive Jedediah Purdy-like commentary on irrational real estate pricing goes with no response from the President. Is he truly a moral wastrel and ignoring me? Have I

In 192, he became the first director of the budget under President Warren Harding. In 1924, he worked out the Dawes Plan with European representatives in Paris to stabilize the German mark, a feat for which he was co-winner of the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize. In 1930, he became ambassador to Britain under President Herbert Hoover. Dawes was a skilled financial advisor with a knack for reducing expenditures. Comments on the Dawes Arboretum, by Susan Tomlinson
The Dawes Arboretum was founded in June 1929 by Beman and Bertie Dawes, two individuals who loved land and trees. This nonprofit, private operating foundation now consists of 1,149 acres of plant collections, agriculture, silviculture, and natural areas. By definition, an arboretum is a place where trees, shrubs, and other woody plants are grown, exhibited and labeled for scientific and educational purposes (Dawes Information Pamphlet). After visiting the Dawes Arboretum one will see that it brings a much more inclusive feeling and definition to the word arboretum. Students examining some of the Conifers in the Arboretum's collection Dawes Arboretum was initiated to "Éencourage the planting of forest and ornamental trees and to demonstrate the value ofÉtrees for these purposes; for practical and scientific research in horticulture and agricultureÉin order to give pleasureÉ and educationÉ and to increase the general knowledge and love of trees and shrubsÉ."(Dawes Information Pamphlet). Luke Messinger, an employee of Dawes Arboretum, provided a wonderful synopsis on how the organization functions, its' purpose, its' history, and its' future. The original Dawes Family residence The history of Dawes is amazing. Beman Gates Dawes, husband of Bertie Dawes, formed The Pure Oil company in 1920, and used the assets from The Pure Oil Company to establish an endowment fund for perpetual operation of The Dawes Arboretum. Beman's brother, Brigadier General Charles Gates Dawes, also contributed to the endowment. Charles was Vice President of The United States, 1925 to 1929, and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 (Dawes Information Pamphlet). Inclusive in the research of the history department, are the past design, or non-design techniques of the gardens at the arboretum. Past designs include the straight orchard rows, popular in 1950's, and groups of plants from the same families in certain sections of the arboretum. Stepping into the future, the arboretum is constantly building on their world wide collection of plant material.

Dawes Plan Dawes Plan, Dawes to the Reparations Commission of the Allied nations. It was accepted the same year by Germany and the Allies. The Dawes committee consisted of ten representatives, two each from Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, and the United States; it was entrusted with finding a solution for the collection of the German reparations debt, set at almost 20 billion marks. Germany had been lagging in payment of this obligation, and the Dawes Plan provided that the Ruhr area be evacuated by Allied occupation troops, that reparation payment should begin at 1 billion marks for the first year and should rise over a period of four years to 2.5 billion marks per year, that the German Reichsbank be reorganized under Allied supervision, and that the sources for the reparation money should include transportation, excise, and custom taxes. The plan went into effect in Sept., 1924. Although German business picked up and reparations payments were made promptly, it became obvious that Germany could not long continue those huge annual payments. As a result, the Young Plan was substituted in 1929.
