EVANSTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY Frequently Asked Questions Links to Questions: Why is the house so dark? How was Dawes House lighted and heated? Where is Dawes buried? When did Dawes move to Evanston? ... When the house was built, how far away was Lake Michigan? Why is the house so dark? At one time people used "task lighting" in their houses. This form of lighting lit up only the area in which they were working. They did not believe in lighting the entire room as is so often done today. Electricity was also much brighter than gas or candlelight; consequently, electrically lit rooms were considered quite bright. By restoring the room to this level of lighting, visitors get a better feel of what the house was really like during that era. How was Dawes House lighted and heated? From the beginning, the house had electric fixtures and was heated by coal and then converted to gas. The radiators are original to the house. Forced-air floor vents are used in the library.

“We must not fear the consequences of truth, only the failure to tell it completely." Charles Dawes Charles Dawes, Calvin Coolidge’s Vice President, developed a life-long interest in banking and finance into a prominent political career. From his beginnings as a lawyer in Nebraska and a successful career in real estate and investment to his political and governmental career, Dawes left his mark on the nation. Dawes’s family also had prominent businessmen among its lineage. His father owned and managed a successful lumber company in Marietta, Ohio. An uncle was a prosperous banker. The experiences and influences of his family members shaped his life. In his autobiography Calvin Coolidge noted the importance of one’s ancestors by recalling the comments of a New England sage "reported to have said that the education of a child should begin several generations before it is born." Given the contributions of the Dawes family heritage to the American experience, these words definitely applied to Dawes’s life.

About Dawes Middle School
Charles Gates Dawes
Dawes Middle School was named after Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951) Charles Dawes came to Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 21. He spent eight years in the Capital city as a practicing attorney. From Lincoln he moved to Evanston, Illinois, where he entered business.
During his tenure in Lincoln he became a close friend of John J. Pershing who was on the ROTC staff at the University of Nebraska. This acquaintanceship was to prove profitable in later years.
Due to his tremendous success in the business world he became influential in the fields of banking and finance. This achievement led to his first major position of public service, Comptroller of Currency under President McKinley in 1897. He held this post until 1902 when he founded the Central Trust Company of Illinois.
In 1917, Mr. Dawes joined the Army and was given a commission as Major in the engineers. He was rapidly promoted to serving as purchasing agent for the American Expeditionary Force in France under the direct command of General John J. Pershing. After the war, General Dawes served as the first Director of the Budget under President Harding in 1921.
And here is the rest of his life in a more summarized form:
1923 Authored the Dawes Plan for Reparations which brought about the economic stability of Europe following World War I.

HOME FAMILY TREE Simeon and Hannah (Dawes) Howe and their children moved from Machias, Maine to St. George, New Brunswick in the 1830s. We are fortunate to have many items that have been passed down to their descendants that tell us much more about them than just names and dates and places do. Their descendants have been very generous in sharing these items and allowing me to post them here. In 1837, their daughter, Hannah, stitched a sampler which lists all of the family members except Sarah Maria, who was born two years later. This sampler was handed down to Hannah's daughter Adelia (Gillmor) Dick, who in turn passed it to her daughter, Winnifred May (Dick) Simmons. A photo of it was given to me by Bruce and Joan (Simmons) Leonard, of Ontario, who own it now. Joan is Winnifred's granddaughter. The two eldest sons of Simeon and Hannah, Henry and James, went off to the California gold rush in 1849. The story of that adventure and of their families' trip to California in 1852 to join them was told by James Howe Junior, son of James, and separately by Frank Howe, son of Henry. gold rush story (by Frank Howe) came to me from Margaret Hyun, who is a descendant of Henry. Margaret also provided me with copies of the Howe family letters. These letters were received by one of the Howe sisters, Sarah Maria (Howe) Beckwith, from other family members. She saved them and they were passed down in her family. (Sarah Maria was called Maria, to rhyme with "pariah.") The James Howe family’s
