    Sir Henry Hallett Dale
Henry Hallett Dale was an English physiologist born in London, England on June 9, 1875. His research career began at Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories in 1904 while he pursued a degree in medicine at the University of Cambridge. From 1928 to 1942, Dale was director of the National Institute for Medical Research. During World War II, he served as chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet, and, in 1932, was knighted Sir Henry Hallett Dale. Dale identified histamine in animal tissues in 1911, and after studying the physiological effects, concluded that it was responsible for certain allergic and anaphylactic reactions. The neuro-transmitter, acetylcholine, was isolated by Dale in 1914. In the following years, he discovered acetylcholine's presence in animal tissues and found that it was released from nerve endings of the parasympathetic nervous system. Dale's research established acetylcholine as a chemical transmitter of nerve impulses. Sir Henry Hallett Dale and Otto Loewi were jointly awarded the 1936 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries involving the chemical transmission of nerve impulses. In 1944, Dale was also awarded the Order of Merit in recognition for his advancement of science. Sir Henry Hallett Dale passed away on July 23, 1968, at the age of 93.

SIR HENRY H. DALE (born June 9, 1875, London, Eng.died July 23, 1968, Cambridge), English physiologist who in 1914 isolated the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. In 1936 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with the German pharmacologist Otto Loewi for their discoveries in the chemical transmission of nerve impulses.
A graduate in medicine (1909) from the University of Cambridge, Dale began his research career in 1904 at the Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories. In 1914 he joined the staff of what later became the Medical Research Council, and from 1928 to 1942 he was director of its successor organization, the National Institute for Medical Research.
Dale was the first to identify the compound histamine in animal tissues (1911), and he studied histamine's physiological effects, concluding that it is responsible for some allergic and anaphylactic reactions. After successfully isolating acetylcholine in 1914, he established that it occurs in animal tissue, and in the 1930s he showed that it is released at nerve endings in the parasympathetic nervous system. His research established acetylcholine's role as a chemical transmitter of nerve impulses. Dale served as president of the Royal Society and was chairman (during World War II) of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet. He was knighted in 1932 and awarded the Order of Merit in 1944.
Sir Henry married Ellen Harriet Hallett, his first cousin, in 1904. Their eldest daughter, Alison Sarah, is married to Lord Todd, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 1957. Sir Henry Hallett Dale died in 1968.

For his study of acetylcholine as agent in the chemical transmission of nerve impulses he shared with Otto Loewi Otto Loewi was born in 1873 in Frankfurt, Germany. He grew up to become a pharmacologist and later spent many years in Austria where he investigated how vital organs respond to chemical and electrical stimulation. He also established their relative dependence on some kind of proteins for proper function. Consequently, he learnt the way of how nerve impulses are transmitted by chemical messengers. The first chemical neurotransmitter that he identified was acetylcholine. His discoveries helped in enhancing medical therapy and personally earned for him the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine which he shared with Sir Henry Dale.

Thirteen-stories high, helium filled Double Eagle V, piloted by Ben Abruzzo, Larry Newman, Ron Clark and Rocky Aoki of Japan, launched from Nagashimi, Japan on 10 Nov 1981. When it landed 84 hours, 31 minutes later in Mendocino National Forest, Cal., the new distance record was set at 5,768 miles. He also accompanied Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman on the first tranatlantic balloon flight in the Double Eagle II (11 Aug 1978). Abruzzo died when his twin-engine airplane crashed in Albuquerque. Their technique made possible in the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first "test-tube baby," on 25 July 1978. Steptoe, decided at an early age to pursue medicine over music. During World War II, he was captured by the Italians after his ship was sunk. After the war, with a practice in obstetrics and gynecology, he pioneered a new fiber-optic device called a laparoscope to perform minimally invasive abdominal surgery.
