Dalai Lama urges 'respect, compassion, and full human rights for all,' including gays
by Dennis Conkin
Bay Area Reporter, June 19th, 1997
The Dalai Lama, world-revered leader of millions of Buddhists and leader of the Tibetan people, spoke out strongly against discrimination and violence against lesbians and gays during an extraordinary Wednesday, June 11 meeting in San Francisco with lesbian and gay Buddhists, clergy, and human rights activists. The religious leader said at the press conference that he had previously been asked his views on gay marriage, and said that such social sanction of gay relationships "has to be judged in the context of the society itself and the laws and social norms." During the 45-minute meeting, the Nobel peace laureate and Buddhist religious leader voiced his support for the full recognition of human rights for all people, regardless of sexual orientation. Buddhist sexual proscriptions ban homosexual sexual activity and heterosexual sex through orifices other than the vagina, including masturbation or other sexual activity with the hand. Buddhist proscriptions also forbid sex at certain times - such as during full and half moon days, the daytime, and during a wife's menstrual period or pregnancy - or near shrines or temples. Adultery is considered sexual misconduct, but the hiring of a female prostitute for penile-vaginal sex is not, unless one pays a third party to procure the person. From a "Buddhist point of view," lesbian and gay sex "is generally considered sexual misconduct," the Dalai Lama told reporters at a press conference a day earlier.

W hen Pope John Paul II called for interfaith dialogue to be a key component of Christian preparation for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, his words were surely welcomed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The exiled spiritual and temporal leader of Tibetan Buddhists has himself been calling for renewed cooperation among the world's religions. And so it came that a few months back the Dalai Lama, under heavy security because of constant threats to his life, descended by helicopter to the Trappist Cistercian Abbey of Gethsemani, in Kentucky, to attend an East-West gathering of the Monastic Interreligious Dialogue. It was a gesture of solidarity to his friend the late Thomas Merton, taking place on the grounds where Merton had lived. At the July gathering, saffron-robed Buddhist monks and nuns, gray-robed Zen monks and nuns pray and share spiritual insights with black-robed Benedictine and white-and-black-robed Cistercian monks and nuns. And in their midst the Dalai Lama, a world religious leader, sits as a monk among monks, not separately on a dais.

Links Biography of the Dalai Lama His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, is the head of state and spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He was born Lhamo Dhondrub on July 6, 1935, in a small village called Taktser in northeastern Tibet. Born to a peasant family, His Holiness was recognized at the age of two, in accordance with Tibetan tradition, as the reincarnation of his predecessor the 13th Dalai Lama, and thus an incarnation Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion.
The Dalai Lamas are the manifestations of the Bodhisattva (Buddha) of Compassion, who chose to reincarnate to serve the people. Lhamo Dhondrub was, as Dalai Lama, renamed Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso - Holy Lord, Gentle Glory, Compassionate, Defender of the Faith, Ocean of Wisdom. Tibetans normally refer to His Holiness as Yeshe Norbu, the Wishfulfilling Gem or simply Kundun - The Presence.
The enthronement ceremony took place on February 22, 1940 in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

Dalai Lama to meet Bush despite Chinese anger
The White House says the Dalai Lama will be welcomed as a religious leader, rather than a political figure WASHINGTON The Dalai Lama is set to meet U.S. President George W. Bush in Washington Wednesday. The meeting with Tibet's exiled spiritual leader is expected to spark anger from Beijing following earlier condemnation of a meeting between the Dalai Lama and Secretary of State Colin Powell During the meeting with Bush, the Dalai Lama is expected to ask for U.S. backing for efforts to start a dialogue with China. White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Bush considers the Dalai Lama "an important spiritual and religious leader and looks forward to the visit." However, the meetings come at a tense time in Sino-U.S. relations following the recent stand-off over the collision between a U.S. Navy spy plane and a Chinese fighter above the South China Sea. The Dalai Lama's visit to Washington coincides with Beijing's marking of the 50th anniversary of the treaty between Tibet and China that made the Himalayan nation part of China.

Dalai Lama's Letter To President Bush
    Your Excellency,
I am deeply shocked by the terrorist attacks that took place involving four apparently hijacked aircrafts and the immense devastation these caused. It is a terrible tragedy that so many innocent lives have been lost and it seems unbelievable that anyone would choose to target the world trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. We are deeply saddened. On behalf of the Tibetan people I would like to convey our deepest condolence and solidarity with the American people during this painful time. Our prayers go out to the many who have lost their lives, those who have been injured and the many more who have been traumatized by this senseless act of violence. I am attending a special prayer for the United States and it's people at our main temple today.
I am confident that the United States as a great and powerful nation will be able to overcome this present tragedy. The American people have shown their resilience, courage and determination when faced with such difficult and sad situation.
It may seem presumptuous on my part, but I personally believe we need to think seriously whether a violent action is the right thing to do and in the greater interest of the nation and people in the long run. I believe violence will only increase the cycle of violence. But how do we deal with hatred and anger, which are often the root causes of such senseless violence. This is a very difficult question, especially when it concerns a nation and we have certain fixed conceptions of how to deal with such attacks. I am sure that you will make the right decision.

Part I: Address to the United Nations
World Conference on Human Rights Vienna, Austria 15 June, 1993. Excerpts from the Dalai Lama's Address. N o matter what country or continent we come from we are all basically the same human beings. We have the same common human needs and concerns. We all seek happiness and try to avoid suffering regardless of our race, religion, sex or political status. Human beings, indeed all sentient beings, have the right to pursue happiness and live in peace and in freedom. As free human beings we can use our unique intelligence to try to understand ourselves and our world. It is very often the most gifted, dedicated and creative members of our society who become victims of human rights abuses. Thus the political, social, cultural and economic developments of a society are obstructed by the violations of human rights. Therefore, the protection of these rights and freedoms are of immense importance both for the individuals affected and for the development of the society as a whole. Some people think that causing pain to others may lead to their own happiness or that their own happiness is of such importance that the pain of others is of no significance. But this is clearly shortsighted. No one truly benefits from causing harm to another being. Whatever immediate advantage is gained at the expense of someone else is short-lived. In the long run causing others misery and infringing upon their peace and happiness creates anxiety, fear and suspicion for oneself.
