by David Turnley A Multimedia Presentation of BACK NEXT Photojournalist David Turnley has been on the scene of many of the great world-shaping events of the past two decades. He won the World Press Photo in 1986 for his coverage of South Africa under apartheid, the Armenian earthquake of 1988, the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, the massacre in Beijing, the Gulf war in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and most recently the refugee exodus in Kosovo. He has won the NPPA Newspaper Photographer of The Year, the Overseas Press Club Robert Capa Gold Medal, and the Pulitzer Prize. Despite having a career most photographers would die for, in recent years, David has found that the space available for the publication of his work, has been gradually slipping away, as magazines have curtailed the number of pages they have been willing to give "hard news." This frustration has led to experimentation with video as an adjunct to his still photography. Late last year he approached CNN with an idea...suppose he was to take a digital video camera along with his stills and try to talk the Dalai Lama into letting him do a week long photo and video essay. Like so many of David's subjects, the Dalai Lama agreed, and the result was not only the photo essay that we present here, but a one hour television special. Since then, David has attended the Platypus Workshop, along with his twin brother Peter, to expand his knowledge of video journalism. Since his graduation alongside 30 other still photojournalists, both Turnleys have been turning out distinguished television journalism. Peter combined stills and video for a moving segment on Kosovo for CNBC, and David has aired two shows on NIGHTLINE, one on the Kosovo crisi and another on Winnie Mandela.

China to be more democratic, says Dalai Lama
The long-awaited meeting In this story: Abortive uprising Now at loggerheads RELATED STORIES, SITES HONG KONG, China The Dalai Lama has told Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian that China would become more open and democratic. The Tibetan spiritual leader met Chen on Thursday and said that he "sees global change more openness, democracy and respect for human rights," his spokesman said. "China is a part of this world and cannot escape this global change," the Dalai Lama was quoted as saying. He said the plight of Tibet had worsened as Beijing toughened its rules. But he feels "optimistic in the long run", his spokesman Kelsang Gyaltsen said. "Sooner or later there will be changes in China." During the one-hour meeting, the Dalai Lama presented Chen with a hada, or traditional Tibetan white scarf. In return, Chen gave him a copy of his biography, "Taiwan's Son", and a wooden Buddhist statue.
    Abortive uprising
Beijing, labeling the Dalai Lama as a "separatist", has ruled Tibet since 1950. Nine years later, The Dalai Lama fled after an abortive uprising against Chinese occupation.

    Response to Accusations
The following are retractions printed by The Washington Times and the Ming Pao Daily News
Retraction printed in The Washington Times:
Editor's note: When published Nov. 23, 2002, this article incorrectly reported the relationship between a Tibetan sect in northern India and Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, head of the London-based New Kadampa Tradition. Mr. Kelsang and his group announced in 1998 that they have abandoned their dispute with the Dalai Lama and they say their Western Buddhist community is completely independent from those groups in India and Nepal which are suspected of issuing the threats. Retraction printed in the Ming Pao Daily News: Clarification - New Kadampas are not related to terrorist activities Our paper on 25th November quoted from the Washington Times that: During the past few weeks in the northern Indian city, where the Tibetan government-in-exile resides, many posters appeared declaring death threats to the Dalai Lama. The Indian police believed that the death threats originate from a Tibetan Buddhist sect "The Shugden Sect". The followers of the Dalai Lama called the "Shugden Sect" - "The Taliban of Tibetan Buddhism". Related to the Shugden Sect , an organization in England called the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) is founded by exiled lama - Kelsang Gyatso in 1991. Recently, we have received a letter from Mr. Kelsang Gyatso stating that the New Kadampa Tradition is a western Buddhist organization, which is completely unrelated to the Shugden Sects in India, Nepal and other countries. The NKT have absolutely no political affiliations; are not against the Dalai Lama and never have been, but previously they simply requested him to stop his ban of Dorje Shugden worship; this was a request for basic human right of religious freedom. Since October 1998 NKT has decided to completely stop being involved in the Shugden issue, because it is in reality a Tibetan political problem.

So I was fascinated as he meditated and said his morning prayers, yawning occasionally, hiding nothing from the camera. At one point the filmmaker off-screen asked him what he was doing. He said, "Shaping motivation!" What? "Shaping my motivation for the day." The Dalai Lama, at 64, after six decades of study, practice and intellectual and spiritual attainment, was reinforcing his altruistic motivation to make his daily thoughts, words and deeds more beneficial to all beings. m o r e Gurus and Godmen Ever the mystical East, Asia in the 20th century produced a colorful array of godmen who attracted millions of followers, brought down governments and even had songs written about them by The Beatles

Dalai Lama meets Powell, China grumbles
The Dalai Lama says Powell showed "genuine human, warm feeling" during their brief encounter WASHINGTON Ignoring complaints from China, the Dalai Lama and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell have met to discuss promoting human and religious values, and to talk about conditions in Tibet. The Dalai Lama, leader of the Tibetan government in exile, plans to meet with President Bush Wednesday on the day Beijing marks the 50th anniversary of what it calls the "peaceful liberation" of Tibet. In apparent recognition of Chinese sensibilities on the issue, both the White House and the State Department stressed the Dalai Lama's role as a religious rather than a political leader. Meeting with reporters after his 45-minute stay at the State Department, the Buddhist leader said Powell showed "genuine human, warm feelings" during their brief encounter on Tuesday, as did Powell's predecessor, Madeleine Albright. He said Powell "listened very keenly" to the points he raised.

Dalai Lama's Taiwan visit upsets China
The Dalai Lama has attempted to downplay the political significance of his Taiwan visit. In this story: Beijing warnings Religion first RELATED STORIES By staff and wire reports TAIPEI, Taiwan Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama, will begin a visit to Taiwan on Saturday despite Chinese protests. In his second visit to Taiwan, the 14th Dalai Lama will meet President Chen Shui-bian and former president Lee Teng-hui, in a trip some politicians say is bound to strain the island's already tense dealings with mainland China. Beijing, which considers Taiwan and Tibet integral parts of China, has already warned of the visit's "serious consequences", accusing the Dalai Lama of colluding with Taiwanese separatists. The Dalai Lama has tried to play down the political significance of his visit, but Taipei-based Andrew Yang of the Chinese Council of Advanced Policy Studies says the meeting of Taiwan pro-independence leaders "is bound to have some political implications".

So, no less Dalai Lama for not being a monk, he returned to his former pleasures. Since he had been in Lhasa, he had composed poems in a popular style - love lyrics, expressing the frustration he felt with his situation and the love (often unrequited, often too betrayed) for aristocratic ladies and market-girls alike. Both before and after hie disrobed, he used to go down to Shol, a village behind the Potala, and hang out until the early hours, drinking and singing and chatting up the local women - the rooves of certain houses in Shol were painted yellow to honor their famous guest. He would personally serve visitors to the Potala, giving them food and tea, making them feel at ease in his presence.
On June 11th 1706, the Qan had Tshangyang Gyatso removed from the Potala and taken to the Lhaku gardens just outside Lhasa. Sixteen days later, it was declared that the Dalai Lama was deposed and had been ordered to Peking for a meeting with the Emperor. As troops tried to take him away from Lhaku, they were met by huge resistance by both monks and laypeople and, recapturing him, the monks spirited him away to Drepung monastery.
