The Dalai Lama delivers a speech Friday at the University of San Francisco. Story Tools SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) The Dalai Lama started a 16-day U.S. tour, presiding over an interfaith service and receiving an honorary degree at a Jesuit-run university. Flanked by representatives of 25 religions Friday at the University of San Francisco, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said all faiths have the same basic aim to breed compassion among their followers. "I will continue to pursue my struggle, which is to campaign for peace," he told the crowd of about 1,000 faculty, students and members of San Francisco's Tibetan Buddhist community. Before the Dalai Lama received his honorary doctorate of humane letters, worshippers took turns reading from his writings, and from Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Jewish sacred texts.

Tibetans consider Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama to be the living embodiment of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, and their spiritual and temporal leader. Throughout more than 40 years of exile, the Dalai Lama has worked to promote international awareness of Tibet and a non-violent means of regaining Tibet's freedom. In 1988, the Dalai Lama put forward the "Strasbourg Proposal" in which he called for genuine autonomy for Tibet rather than complete independence - a major concession. The Government-in-Exile has drafted a constitution for an autonomous and democratic Tibet and holds elections for the Tibetan Parliament.

talks candidly and entertainingly about his long life in exile
By Ron Gluckman / Dharamsala T HE MORNING TV NEWS provides an alarming wake-up call. Chinese missiles are hurtling across the Taiwan Strait. Ships are being rocketed. One mistake, and it looks like it might be war. "We must understand China," my companion says calmly. "It is very concerned about stability. Stability must come from inner-satisfaction. But, at the moment, China's method is to use force. Sooner or later, though, it will have to find another way to solve these problems towards Taiwan, towards Hong Kong or towards Tibet." There is no resentment, no anger in the voice of the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. Still, the 60-year-old god king who fled Tibet on the back of a yak nearly four decades ago seems noticeably troubled by the TV news, beamed in by satellite to his home-in-exile, in Dharamsala, high in the mountains of India. His signature smile leaves his face as he takes off his glasses and rubs his dark brow.

Tibetan art of divination
By Dorjee Tseten Tibetan Bulletin
March - April 1995
Although means of telling the future were employed in Tibet, before the advent of Buddhism, they are not regarded as an alien remnant outside the Buddhist framework that it is occasionally convenient to call upon. Rather, they are used within the sphere of Buddhist concepts, functioning in accordance with Buddhist principles such as karma. There are no references to divination in the collections of sutras, but many can be found in the tantras. Purpose: By looking into someone's future, the diviner or medium can assess the particular situation and recommend how to respond or deal with it Remedial action, in the form of rituals, evokes positive forces and can result in a change in the person's fortune. Rituals will not change a person's karma, and those requesting and performing a divination are aware of this. However, they can induce latent positive potential to take precedence over that which is perceived as the cause of an impending misfortune. The efficacy of a ritual involves the patron making offerings of food and money to the monks or adepts performing it. The merit acquired from this gift is used to trigger the forces of latent positive potential in oneself or others. Thus, one is not transferring merit and stepping outside the laws of cause and effect, but merely using merit to awaken the forces of one's own or other's good karma.

China urges Dalai Lama to return
BEIJING, China (Reuters) Beijing has renewed its call for Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to shed his independence goals and return to China. A strongly worded magazine article called on the Dalai Lama, who ended on Saturday a hospital stay in India's financial capital of Bombay, to return to the "embrace of the motherland," the official news agency Xinhua said Sunday "The Central Government still waits for the 14th Dalai Lama to give up his independence demand and end his exile life and return home," Xinhua late on Saturday quoted the article in China's Tibet magazine as saying. The 66-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, who lives in India, has called for international support for his non-violent campaign to gain Tibet independence from China, which annexed the Himalayan state in the 1950s. INDEPTH: THE DALAI LAMA
The Dalai Lama
RELATED:
CBC Radio's Mary Wiens reports on the Tibetan community in Toronto.
Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, has lived in exile since 1959, but he is still considered by many to be both the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people.
He was born Lhamo Dhondrub, to a peasant family in Takster, a small village in northeast Tibet on July 6, 1935.
When he was two years old, in 1937, the Tibetan government appointed a mission to find a successor to the 13th Dalai Lama, who had died in 1933. The mission was led to the village by traditional signs and miracles. The boy was tested by the mission and successfully recognized objects that had belonged to his predecessor. A state oracle then confirmed that he was the reincarnation of previous Dalai Lamas.
He was installed on Feb. 22, 1940, taking the full name, Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso. Regents ruled Tibet while the boy began his education and training as a monk.

INDEPTH: THE DALAI LAMA
Interview
Interviewer: Hana Gartner
From The National April 19, 2004

Since he arrived in Canada this weekend, people can't seem to get enough of the smiling monk with the rock star appeal, and it's no secret why. Behind that grin is one of the most influential voices in the world. The Dalai Lama is the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, a disciple of non-violence and a living icon. He spoke with the CBC's Hana Gartner.
Hana Gartner : He calls himself a simple Buddhist monk. And that's how he arrived in Vancouver. No fanfare, no official welcome. Just some faithful followers anxious to get a glimpse of His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. He'll meet with government leaders who finally decided they would see him despite China's objections. When he's in the States, this Nobel Peace Prize winner gets the star treatment. Presidents and celebrities line up to get a private audience and a picture. Tibet's exiled spiritual and temporal leader has become an icon. His message of peace and happiness is more self-help than religion, and that is turning his books into bestsellers and turning him into a celebrity. Why is there this hunger for a spiritual hero?

Dalai Lama 'refused' Russian visa
China refuses to recognize the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has been forced to can a visit to Mongolia after Russia refused to issue him a visa. The Dalai Lama had been scheduled to visit Mongolia this week, but because Russia refused to allow him to transit through, the trip has been postponed until next year, The Associated Press reports. While Foreign Ministry officials in Moscow have said they were not aware of the request, a Tibetan spokesperson has said the problem arose because the Dalai Lama's trip clashed with several visits by Chinese leaders. Beijing has been trying to tighten its grip on Tibet's restive and highly religious people since communist troops arrived in the Himalayan region in 1950. Nine years later, the Dalai Lama fled into exile as an uprising against Chinese rule collapsed, and now lives with other Tibetan exiles in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala.
