Dalai Lama, Tibetan leader AS LEADER of the Tibetan people His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, leads a life of exile in India. After an uprising against Chinese rule 42 years ago, the Dalai Lama fled, followed by thousands of Tibetans. Over the decades the 66-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner and advocate of non-violence has continued to seek "genuine autonomy" for his homeland, a land that China considers to be an integral part of its territory. The Chinese believe communism liberated the Tibetans from a feudal theocracy led by the Dalai Lamas and that Tibet has developed considerably under their rule. Others have claimed human rights abuses, as well as cultural and ecological destruction.

Seine Heiligkeit der 14. Dalai Lama

MESSAGE SUPPORTING THE MORATORIUM ON THE
DEATH PENALTY
In general, death is something none of us wants, in fact it is something we don't even like to think about. When death takes place naturally, it is a process beyond our control to stop, but where death is willfully and deliberately brought about, it is very unfortunate. Of course, within our legal systems there are said to be certain reasons and purposes for employing the death penalty. It is used to punish offenders, to prevent them ever repeating their misdeed and to deter others. However, if we examine the situation more carefully, we will find that these are not the real solutions.
Harmful actions and their tragic consequences all have their origin in disturbing emotions and negative thoughts, and these are a state of mind, whose potential we find within all human beings. From this point of view, every one of us has the potential to commit crimes, because we are all subject to negative disturbing emotions and negative mental qualities. And we will not overcome these by executing other people.
What is deemed criminal can vary greatly from country to country. In some countries, for example, speaking out for human rights is considered criminal, whereas in other countries preventing free speech is a crime. The punishments for crimes are also very different, but usually include various forms of imprisonment or hardship, financial penalties and, in a number of countries, physical pain. In some countries, crimes that the government considers very serious are punished by executing the person who committed the crime.

1. Dalai Lama's confirmation of Reincarnation Invalid - Xinhua
Beijing, May 17 (Xinhua) - A spokesman from the Bureau of
Religious Affairs under the State Council issued a statement here
today in an interview with Xinhua with regard to Dalai Lama's act
in confirming the reincarnation of a Tibetan boy for Panchen Lama
in India. The full text of the statement is as follows:
On May 14, Dalai Lama suddenly declared, in India, a boy from
Tibet is the +reincarnated child of Panchen+. This fully
demonstrates the political plot of the Dalai clique in its
continuous splittist activities by making use of Panchen Lama's
reincarnation after repeated failures in its acts abroad aimed at
splitting the motherland". It is know to all that both the titles of Dalai Lama and Panchen Erdine of the gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism were conferred by the Central Government of the Qing Dynasty. Since the central government announced the system of lot-drawing in the 57th year of the rein of Emperor Qian Long (1792), the finding of reincarnated child for both Dalai and Panchen should follow a religious ritual, under which, several potential

http://www.dalailamanyc.org/
We are honored that His Holiness the Dalai Lama returned to New York City to impart his extraordinary knowledge of inner peace and profound wisdom. During a remarkable five-day visit here, from September 17 to 21, 2003, His Holiness gave four days of teachings to a sold out audience of 3,000 at the Beacon Theatre and addressed a crowd of more than a thousand people in Central Park. This was the third time that the Tibet Center and the Gere Foundation/Initiatives Foundation joined together to host His Holiness' teachings in New York. In 1991, we invited His Holiness to bestow the Kalachakra initiation; and in 1999, His Holiness returned to teach at the Beacon Theatre and in Central Park. Please return in the coming weeks to explore the new additions to our website, which will include photos from many of the events and extensive information on the teachings given at the Beacon Theatre and Central Park.

A conversation with Robert Thurman
W hen the Dalai Lama Accepted the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on global human rights particularly for his ceaseless efforts to free his country from Chinese rule he referred to himself as "a simple monk from Tibet." But His Holiness is also the spiritual and political leader of 6 million Tibetans, who believe him to be the 14th earthly incarnation of the heavenly deity of compassion and mercy. Like his 13 predecessors, he works for the regeneration and continuation of the Tibetan Vajrayana branch of Buddhist tradition. Born in 1935, Tenzin Gyatso was recognized at the age of 2 as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, and by age 19 he was negotiating with China's Mao Tse-tung over the future of Tibet, which China invaded in 1950 and has occupied ever since. After years of failed peace talks and a violent suppression of Tibet's resistance movement in which tens of thousands of Tibetans died, the Dalai Lama fled in 1959 to Dharamsala, India, where he continues to be the spiritual leader of Tibet's people and heads Tibet's government-in-exile. Robert A. F. Thurman was ordained a Buddhist monk in 1964 by the Dalai Lama. He is currently the Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University. A respected scholar and translator of Tibetan and Sanskrit, Thurman is also the author of

About this page

The spiritual head of Lamaism (Tibetan Buddhism ). Considered by some to be a reincarnation of the Buddha of compassion. See also: lama
Dalai is a Mongolian word that means "ocean" thus, the rendering of Dalai Lama is "ocean of wisdom" Source: J. Isamu Yamamoto
His official titles are "Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso," meaning "Holy Lord, Gentle Glory, Eloquent, Compassionate, Learned Defender of the Faith, Ocean of Wisdom."
After Pope John Paul II and Billy Graham, he is probably the most recognized religious figure on our planet. He is the voice of Buddhism to the nations and is often called the "god-king" of Tibet. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. His recent books, Ethics for a New Millennium and The Art of Happiness became best-sellers. He is treated with immense respect by secular media and draws crowds up to 300,000 at his public talks.
These titles and accolades belong to Buddhism's leading apostle, the Dalai Lama. Born as Lhamo Thondup in 1935 in northeast Tibet, he was chosen as the 14th Dalai Lama (Tibet's highest religious figure) at age 2. He was enthroned in 1940 and became political leader of Tibet at age 15, just after Mao's armies began their takeover of Tibet. In exile since 1959, the Dalai Lama has become a world leader in ethics, politics, and religion.

The Dalai Lama begins each day with six hours of prayer and meditation
"Being in exile ... has opened up the world to him."
By John Christensen
CNN Interactive "I pray for Tibet every day. But, also, I pray for China. I'm optimistic. Of course, I've been optimistic for 37 years now!" Dalai Lama, quoted in Asiaweek, May 1996 (CNN) During a visit with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India , photographer David Turnley filmed an exchange between the Tibetan Buddhist leader and a nun that appears in the CNN production, "The Dalai Lama: At Home in Exile." The nun, wearing the crimson robe emblematic of Tibetan Buddhists, is very old and very feeble and is assisted to the low platform where the Dalai Lama is sitting cross-legged. Kneeling, head bent, she holds out prayer beads for him to bless. The Dalai Lama blows on the beads, then pinches her lightly on the cheek and teases her about gaining weight. The nun leans closer and their heads touch. The Dalai Lama

China keeps up attacks on Dalai Lama
A buddhist nun called China's comments about the Dalai Lama as "an insult to Buddhism" In this story: 'Separating the motherland' 'Spiritual mission' RELATED STORIES By staff and wire reports BEIJING, China China has fired new verbal shots against the Dalai Lama renewing accusations that the exiled Tibetan leader was collaborating with pro-independence forces on Taiwan. A commentary by the official Xinhua news agency Sunday said the Dalai Lama's tour was "a political visit" driven by separatist motives he shares with officials in Taipei. The report came shortly before the Dalai Lama appeared alongside Taiwan Vice President Annette Lu at a gathering in Taipei where they issued a joint call for peace and understanding from Beijing. Vice President Lu, whom China has branded "scum of the nation" for describing Taiwan and China as "close neighbors but distant relatives," thanked the exiled spiritual leader for braving China's disapproval and showing concern for Taiwan.
