The Proceedings of the international conference “The Discovery of Polonium and Radium – its Scientific and Philosophical Consequences, Benefits and Threats to Mankind”, held in Warsaw on September 17-20 1998
The Discovery of Polonium and Radium – its Scientific and Philosophical Consequences, Benefits and Threats to Mankind Altogether more than thirty Conferences, symposia, scientific seminars, public lectures, exhibitions and cinema shows were held in Poland over that period in relation with celebrations. A number of valuable publications appeared, and topics of scientific research enjoyed an increased presence of media. The celebrations in Poland were held in close cooperation with France, the land of the discovery of radioactivity and Maria Sklodowska-Curie’s second homeland. At the same time, they formed an important contribution to the wide range of events with which the world-wide scientific community reaffirmed that the discovery of Polonium and Radium not only opened new areas for research, but even today continues to provide meaningful inspiration for new scientific inquiry. For these reasons the organizers of the conference “The Discovery of Polonium and Radium…” gave it the form of a series of symposia devoted to presenting areas of scientific research, both traditional and recent, inspired by the discovery of radioactivity, informing about the scientific progress that has been achieved, and, to the extent possible, about the foreseeable directions of future research.

Marie and Pierre Curie and the Discovery of Polonium and Radium
Introduction
At the end of the 19th century, a number of discoveries were made in physics which paved the way for the breakthrough of modern physics and led to the revolutionary technical development that is continually changing our daily lives. Around 1886, Heinrich Hertz demonstrated experimentally the existence of radio waves. It is said that Hertz only smiled incredulously when anyone predicted that his waves would one day be sent round the earth. Hertz died in 1894 at the early age of 37. In September 1895, Guglielmo Marconi sent the first radio signal over a distance of 1.5 km. In 1901 he spanned the Atlantic. Hertz did not live long enough to experience the far-reaching positive effects of his great discovery, nor of course did he have to see it abused in bad television programs. It is hard to predict the consequences of new discoveries in physics. On November 8, 1895, Henri Becquerel was exposing salts of uranium to sunlight to study whether the new radiation could have a connection with luminescence, he found out by chance - thanks to a few days of cloudy weather - that another new type of radiation was being spontaneously emanated without the salts of uranium having to be illuminated - a radiation that could pass through metal foil and darken a photographic plate. The two researchers who were to play a major role in the continued study of this new radiation were Marie and Pierre Curie.

Varsovia, Polonia 1867 - Valence 1934

Marie Curie
Remarkable Scientist
Marie Curie, renowned scientist in her own right and co-discoverer of radium with her husband, Pierre, made possible many of the major medical diagnostic techniques that we all take for granted today. Anyone who has ever had an x-ray owes Marie Curie a debt of gratitude, not only for her scientific research, but for her tireless work to set up and use x-ray machines on the battlefields of Europe during World War I. Madame Curie was the special guest of honor at the dedication of Hepburn Hall for Chemistry at St. Lawrence University in 1929. Born Manya Sklodowska in Warsaw, on November 7, 1867, she was the fifth and youngest child of Bronsilawa Boguska, a pianist, singer, and teacher, and Wladyslaw Sklodowski, a professor of mathematics and physics. Even as a very young girl she was fascinated by her father’s physics equipment, and like him she was quiet and studious. A talented student with a prodigious memory, she won a gold medal on completion of her secondary education at the Russian lycée at the age of 16. She spent the next eight years working as a tutor and a governess to earn enough money to attend the Sorbonne in Paris, studying mathematics and physics in her spare time. In November 1891, Maria left Poland and registered at the Sorbonne under the French version of her first name, "Marie." At the Sorbonne she met physicists who were already well knownJean Perrin, Charles Maurain, and Aimé Cotton. Living in Spartan conditions, she graduated first in her class in physical sciences in 1893. She began to work in Lippmann's research laboratory and in 1894 placed second in mathematical sciences. During the spring she met Pierre Curie, a highly acclaimed professor at the School of Physics. They married on July 26, 1895, launching one of the most significant scientific partnerships in history.

Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas. There are sadistic scientists who hurry to hunt down error instead of establishing the truth. One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done . . . Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.
