Rollins College Alumnus is a Nobel Laureate
Dr. Donald J Cram, Rollins '41, recipient of the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. STOCKHOLM, SWEDENAt a press conference during the week he was to receive the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, Donald Cram '41, exhibited his characteristically good sense of humor. Relaxed during his first official meeting with the press and the other honorees for Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics and economic sciences, Cram attempted to pull it all into perspective, and at the same time, put everyone else at ease. "Someone asked me if I won the 'Nobel Peace Prize for Chemistry'," Cram quipped to the gathering at the Royal Academy of Sciences. "I had to tell them 'No, I won a piece of the chemistry prize.'" Clearly at his best when "on stage," the affable research scientist seemed at ease, confident and in control. Wearing one of his 150 "trademark" bow ties and flashing a boyish grin, the 68-year-old UCLA professor produced a plastic model of one of his synthetically-produced chemical compounds. Using the model to demonstrate, Cram explained how the principle of host-guest chemistry works. In the process, he demonstrated a type of charm that made him a popular professor and mentor to thousands of chemistry students in the U.S. and around the world. Cram, who majored in chemistry during his undergraduate years at Rollins, shares the Nobel Prize with Dr. Jean-Marie Lehn of Strasbourg, France and Charles J. Pedersen of Salem, NJ. the three were cited for their work in synthesizing molecules that mimic important biological processes.

- Emil Fischer: il concetto ‘lock and key’. - Paul Ehrlich: introduzione del concetto di ‘recettore’. - K.L. The Nature of the Chemical Bond’.

1992 Academy Awards: NAS Honors 13 Scientific Luminaries
By Scott Huler Date: April 27, 1992 The National Academy of Sciences is scheduled to present 11 awards to 13 noteworthy individuals in the scientific community at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C., today. "Certain awards are annual, and some cycle differentlyevery two years, every five years," though all are given at the spring NAS meeting, says Mary Hofbauer Brown, NAS director of membership services. "This year we have a small cropnext year we'll have something like 16 or 17." Of the recipients, Brown says, "of course, all are outstanding, or they would not be receiving awards from NAS and other groups." This year's winners' CVs contain a wide variety of other awards, fellowships, and prizes, including, in the case of Chemical Sciences Award winner Donald Cram, the Nobel Prize. Only two honorees are members of NASCram and Public Welfare Medalist Philip Hauge Abelson, former editor of Science magazine. Considered the academy's highest honor, the Public Welfare Medal is given annually to a member of the scientific community who has made a noteworthy contribution to science in general, and to the relationship between science and the public. Founded in 1914, the award has been given to such influential science figures as former surgeon general C. Everett Koop and New York Times science writer Walter Sullivan. For Abelson, a noted geologist before he became editor of Scienceserving at the magazine for 22 years until his 1984 retirementreceiving the 1992 Public Welfare Medal "is very satisfying."

    Enhancing Separations and Analysis
Scientific Impact: Cram helped to lay the foundation for one of the most active fields of chemical research, known as host-guest or supramolecular chemistry, which is directly applicable to separations. The work on inductively coupled plasma ushered in the era of ultra-trace multi-element analysis, enabling the rapid and accurate determination of up to 70 elements in metals, alloys, and organic compounds (such as oil, serum, blood, and soils). SIMION is used at every national laboratory. Social Impact: Inductively coupled plasma is used in environmental testing and the production of ultrapure materials for the semiconductor and nuclear industries. The research on supercritical fluids contributed to the recent introduction of "green chemistry" for commercial dry cleaning and polymer manufacturing. SIMION is used by instrument suppliers that design mass spectrometers. Reference: DOE-BES Chemical Sciences, Highlights of Progress in Separations Sciences , 1980-1999, Edited by Charles H. Sprague Lectureship
The Sprague Lectureship was initially established in 1959 by James Sprague with funds from a Merck Board of Directors' Scientific Award (a program which honors especially valued scientific leaders within the Merck Pharmaceutical Company) James M. Sprague James M. Sprague received his AB at Franklin College in 1930 and his PhD at the University of Wisconsin, Madison with Homer Adkins in 1934, studying the hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of diketones. He then did postdoctoral work at Yale, and started at Sharpe and Dohme in 1937, and then continued at Merck Sharpe and Dohme when the two companies merged in 1953. Sprague worked extensively in the area of heterocyclic compounds. He made important discoveries in the area of sulfa drugs, which initially became important as the first effective antimicrobial drugs, but later found broader uses. Particularly important was the development of a new class of drugs, the thiazide diuretics. One of these, the drug Diuril, dramatically altered the treatment of congestive heart failure and high blood pressure. Other products he helped develop are Elavil, an antidepressant, and Benemid, a treatment for gout. Sprague died in 2000 at the age of 91. The Merck Lectureship in honor of Sprague started in 1959, when the first speaker was George Wittig, who later won the Nobel prize.
