Mairead Corrigan Maguire and the Northern Irish Peace People
Women primarily, Protestants, Catholics, and secular folk, rich and poor, work together for peace. By Paul Dekar An air of unreality characterized my initial impressions during a week's visit to Northern Ireland last May. So friendly are the people, it appeared that everyone gets along with everybody. To judge from the prosperous farms, or the construction sites, new houses, and busy shops in Belfast, it appeared to be a land of milk and honey! I walked about without fear, it appeared that the benign neglect that the media and the international peace movement bestow on Northern Ireland was warranted. Unless one catches sight of the army patrols. Unless one notes the graffiti as one crosses Falls Road, the peace line. "Our day will come', '1916-1991. 75 years of struggle" "Arms are for struggle." Unless, of course, one hears Ian Paisley preach. Since the "troubles" erupted in 1968, inter-communal violence has marked Northern Ireland. While violence has never affected the whole population directly, it is virtually impossible to meet anyone unaffected personally by violence. Murder, retaliation, individuals targeted, different groups subjected to fear: these compound other problems such as juvenile crime, the economic backwardness of the country, an overwhelming sense of hopelessness.

The senseless killing of innocent children produced a wave of revulsion against the violence which had been sweeping Northern Ireland, with Catholic IRA members using murder and terror to drive out the British, Protestant extremists doing the same in response, and many innocent victims killed as a consequence. The Peace People movement was led by Betty Williams, a housewife , and Mairead Corrigan, and young aunt of the dead children murdered in this terrorism. The two women led marches in which Protestants and Catholics walked together in demonstrations for peace and against violence. Williams and Corrigan "have shown us what ordinary people can do to promote peace."

Act to Save the Children of Iraq
by Mairead Corrigan Maguire*, August 2002 August 6, 2002 (Hiroshima Day) marked the 12th year of the economic sanctions against Iraq. These economic sanctions were described to me during my visit to Iraq by an Iraqi teenager as being a "silent nuclear bomb that drops into every home and is slowly destroying not only the children but the whole Iraqi nation.” Well over a half million Iraqi children have died of malnutrition and preventable diseases (resulting from the after-effects of the Gulf War and continuing economic sanctions) and each day more children die unnecessarily. Now, as the Bush Administration is making extremely clear, Iraq is in serious danger of an all-out US assault in the coming months. This week when the Iraqi government offered weapons inspections, the American administration responded by saying it is not about weapons inspections. Rather than going into yet another war causing further untold suffering to Iraqi civilians (also effecting the Middle East and the entire human family, as we are now so interconnected), every diplomatic option must be tried to divert war. The age of wars has gone, such barbaric activity is not acceptable at any time. But even for those who believe in war, it should not be acceptable when diplomatic options are readily available as has been, and continues to be, the case with Iraq.

When faced with the terror presented by the extreme violence that rocked Northern Ireland in the 1970’s and 80’s, a cry for peace rang out. This unified call for an end to the killings and a future of peace was the beginning of the 1976 "Peace People" movement, which organized the largest nonviolent demonstrations in the history of Northern Ireland. At the heart of this courageous peace movement stood a young woman named Máiread Corrigan Maguire. She will bring her story and message of nonviolence to Marquette when she speaks on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Weasler Auditorium, which is connected to the Alumni Memorial Union off of the southeast corner of Wells and 16th streets. Parking is available in the structure at 749 N. 16th St. This event is open to the public.
Máiread was thrust into a leadership position in the wake of tragedy. On August 10, 1976, two of her nephews and one of her nieces, all little children, were killed on a Belfast street comer. A British Army patrol shot and killed an Irish Republican Army gunman, whose car then plowed into the sidewalk, killing the children and severely injuring Máiread 's sister Anne. Suddenly, thousands of people began to say, "Enough is enough. The killing and violence have to stop." With help, Máiread organized weekly peace marches and demonstrations that instantly brought out more than half a million people throughout Northern Ireland, as well as in England and Ireland. She also co-founded the Community of the Peace People to continue their peacemaking initiatives. Máiread was awarded the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize.

Thank you very much indeed. My dear friends, it’s a great joy for me to be with you this evening, and I would like to thank each and every one of you for coming out tonight to do me the honor of listening and sharing with me. I would like to thank Father Wild and Marquette University, and the student government body for inviting me to come to the university. And I would like to thank especially Susan Haarman, because I kept getting these e-mails to my home saying “please come to Marquette,” and I felt I would like to do that. So thank you to Susan for writing. Never be afraid when you want to do something. Just get on e-mail and do it.
I’m standing up here and it reminds me in the early days of these people that I went along with to visit a Protestant church. The minister pointed up to his pulpit and he said to me, “Every Sunday, I stand up there in that pulpit, 6 feet above contradiction.” Well, I’m not 6 feet above contradiction. Like you, I’m just trying to see a way through this maze and find a few answers and do my best. Some things I get right and most things I get wrong.
I’m not an expert on any situation, and I don’t have the answers to Northern Ireland’s problems. But I would like to share with you some of the things that we have learned along the way that may be of help to you as we altogether struggle to build a human family and a civilization that is worthy of the name of good men and women.

Women's Ordination Worldwide
1st International Conference
Dublin 2001
[English] Deutsch
'A CELEBRATION OF WOMEN'S CALL TO A RENEWED PRIESTHOOD IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH'
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, "MY SOUL DOTH MAGNIFY THE LORD AND MY SPIRIT HATH REJOICED IN GOD MY SAVIOUR". I love these words of the Magnificat. They are the words of a woman who has found inner freedom. A woman who feels fulfilled and whose 'spirit' dances with joy and gratitude to God. Mary says 'yes' to becoming the mother of Jesus, and through the working of the Holy Spirit, the impossible becomes possible. And just as Mary said 'yes' and gave birth to Jesus, so too each one of us are called to give birth to love and truth. This calling starts in the heart, and for some it may be to an ordained or lay ministry. God chooses whom to call and it comes with our freedom to say 'yes' or 'no'. And that is why I am so happy to be with you all at this Conference. We come together in celebration of women's call to a renewed priesthood in the Catholic Church. I want to acknowledge my joy at being here in the company of some of these women to whom God has given a priestly vocation. And while I myself, do not feel called to Ordained Ministry, I fully support these women, and this Movement. I want also to thank Women's Ordination Worldwide for their invitation to be present. For a long time I have believed that woman's ordination in the Catholic Church will happen, it is only a matter of time. However, before now, I did not feel the need to seek out and listen to women who had such a calling. Now, I have listened and not only will I continue to fully support them and this movement, but will do what I can to break down the cold wall of silence and apathy to their plight and pain.

It is with the greatest sadness that the people of the World watched the tragedy of the horrific events of Tuesday 11th September, 2001, in America.
The day of this atrocity will remain in all our memories; it has moved many millions of people to tears of shock and sadness.
We share in the American peoples' grief during this time of need, and send our condolences to all.
We understand the depth of feelings of loss and pain but we would appeal that there be no retaliation. Violence serves no purpose. Violence solves no problems. Retaliation would mean the further deaths of many more people. This would, in turn, add to an increasing sense of fear, anxiety, and hopelessness, being felt around the world.
As the human family we need HOPE, and this can come from the people of the World, when they rise above their immediate feelings of pain and anger at such inhumanity, and in a calmer atmosphere allow reason to guide their decisions. In this way 'wisdom' can find a response to this terrible atrocity which does not add to the terrible death and destruction already perpetrated on our fellow brothers and sister in the United States.
In this the new millennium, the human family has an opportunity to move away from the old responses of 'an eye for an eye' and deal with their problems in a collective and civilised manner, befitted the great goodness that lives in every human heart.

"Individuals have tremendous power, and it is the power of non-violence.
Individuals have to mobilize to make a difference, but tragically
