hosted by hosted-webs.com HISTORY of NOBEL PRIZE Winning a Nobel Prize is a life-changing honor. Whether the laureate is an internationally known figure (such as Nelson Mandela, winner of the 1993 Peace Prize) or a scientist plucked from obscurity (like Richard R. Ernst, who won the 1991 prize in chemistry for refinements in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy), the award brings with it worldwide recognition that highlights one's life work and provides the funds to continue and further the mission. For academics and institutions, a Nobel Prize is used to attract the best and the brightest minds, whether students or scholars.
ALFRED B. NOBEL Alfred B. Nobel (1833–1896), the Swedish chemist and engineer who invented dynamite, left $9 million in his will to establish the Nobel Prizes, which are awarded annually, without regard to nationality, in six areas (peace, literature, physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and economic science) "to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind." At first glance, it seems odd that the inventor of a powerful explosive would endow a group of awards that includes a peace prize. But Nobel was an industrialist with a conscience. He is credited with creating a controllable combustible that made blasting rock and the construction of canals and tunnels a relatively safe process. Nobel also contributed to the inventions of synthetic rubber, artificial silk, and synthetic leather. He held more than 350 patents. His interests were not limited to science. In fact, he was a lover of English literature and poetry and wrote several novels and poems. At his death, he left a library of more than 1,500 books, from fiction to philosophy.

  • Both Parties Seek Graceful Way to Put Off Nuclear Treaty Vote By WILLIAM J. BROAD group of 32 Nobel laureates in physics on Tuesday urged the Senate to approve the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, calling it "central to future efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons." U.S. approval is imperative, the scientists said, and would mark "an important advance in uniting the world in an effort to contain and reduce the dangers of nuclear arms." The plea was conveyed by the American Physical Society, the world's leading group of physicists, which sent letters Tuesday to every senator. Representatives of the group said they knew of no instance in which so many prominent American physicists had shown such unity. "To line up this many physics Nobel laureates is unprecedented," said Dr. Robert L. Park, a physicist at the University of Maryland who directs the group's Washington office. The 32 signers range from hawks to doves, Park pointed out, making the appeal wide and deep. A few are former designers of nuclear arms, a field dominated by physicists. Jerome I. Friedman, the president of the physics group, a Nobel laureate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an organizer of the letter, said the test ban "is important for the future of humankind, and therefore has to be taken extremely seriously."

    John Robert Schrieffer
    b. May 31, 1931, Oak Park, Ill., U.S.A.
John Robert Schrieffer is American physicist and winner, with John Bardeen and Leon N. Cooper, of the 1972 Nobel Prize for Physics for developing the BCS theory (for their initials), the first successful microscopic theory of superconductivity.
    Schrieffer a student of
    the University of
    Illinois, 1954
Following his graduation from Eustis High School in 1949, Schrieffer was admitted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where for two years he majored in electrical engineering, then changed to physics in his junior year. He completed a bachelor's thesis in 1953 on the multiple structure in heavy atoms under the direction of Professor John C. Slater. Following up on an interest in solid state physics developed while at MIT, he began graduate studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he immediately began research with Professor John Bardeen . After working out a problem dealing with electrical conduction on semiconductor surfaces, Schrieffer spent a year in the laboratory, applying the theory to several surface problems. In the third year of graduate studies, he joined Bardeen and Cooper in developing the theory of superconductivity, which constituted his doctoral dissertation in 1957.
Schrieffer spent the academic year 1957-58 as a National Science Foundation fellow at the University of Birmingham and the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, where he continued research in superconductivity. Following a year as assistant professor at the University of Chicago, he returned to the University of Illinois in 1959 as a faculty member. In 1960 he returned to the Bohr Institute for a summer visit, during which he became engaged to Anne Grete Thomsen whom he married at Christmas of that year. The Schrieffers have three children, Bolette, Paul, and Regina. In 1962 Schrieffer joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where in 1964 he was appointed Mary Amanda Wood Professor in Physics.
