    University Professor-at-Large
The University of California appointed Arthur Holly Compton as a Professor-at-Large for the spring semester of 1962. Professor Compton arranged a series of lectures on the general subject of "Man, Science and Society." The first lecture on the subject of "Science and the Changing World" was given on February 15, 1962, and the second lecture entitled "The Good Life in an Age of Science," was given on February 22, 1962. Before he gave his third lecture he was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage and died on March 15, 1962. He was sixty-nine years old. Professor Compton taught at Berkeley in the Summer Sessions of 1921 and 1922 and was awarded the LL.D. degree at the Berkeley commencement exercises in May of 1930. He was closely associated with the late Professor Ernest Lawrence and was instrumental in securing substantial support for the construction of the 184" cyclotron. His close connections with the universities' wartime programs is indicated by his service as the Chairman of the National Academy of Sciences Committee to Evaluate the Use of Atomic Energy in War, Director of the U. S. Government Plutonium Research Project, and Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Manhattan Project. His most notable contribution, now known as the "Compton Effect," was appropriately recognized in 1927 by the award of the Nobel Prize. In this experiment he demonstrated clearly and conclusively the quantum character of light. This brilliant research contribution was made before he was thirty. In the forty years of active research that followed the discovery of the Compton Effect, he continued to make outstanding and leading contributions to cosmic ray and nuclear research.

    NASA
by Michael Braukus, John Loughlin II
NASA announced today that the Gamma Ray Observatory, deployed April 7, 1991, from the Space Shuttle Atlantis, will be renamed in honor of Nobel Prize-winning American physicist Arthur Holly Compton. The new official name of the 17-ton orbiting spacecraft is the Arthur Holly Compton Gamma Ray Observatory or Compton Observatory. Currently in an orbit of 273 x 280 statute miles, the Compton Observatory was designed to study gamma rays, an invisible, high-energy form of radiation. Its instrumentation is used by scientists to study gamma-ray sources such as cosmic gamma-ray bursts, solar flares, supernovae, pulsars, black holes and quasars. Dr. Arthur Holly Compton (1892-1962) was the American physicist whose ground-breaking series of experiments on the interaction of high-energy radiation and matter demonstrated the wave/particle duality of nature. His findings played a key role in the development of modern physics.

    Arthur Compton
Arthur Compton in the news Arthur Holly Compton September 10 March 15 ) won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1927) for discovery of the effect named after him. Around , Compton devised a demonstration method for the Earth's rotation. In 1918, Compton studied X-ray scattering. In , Compton found that X-rays wavelength increases due to scattering of the radiant energy by " free electrons ". Scattered quanta have less energy than the quanta of the original ray. This observation furthers the " particle " concept of electromagnetic radiation . Compton also developed the method for observing at the same instant individual scattered X-ray photons and the recoil electrons (developed with A. W. Simon). In Germany, W. Bothe and H. Geiger independently form a similar method.

Show me a movie about Dr. Compton The man seen in this image is Dr. Arthur Holly Compton. He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1927 for his work on the scattering of high-energy photons by electrons - which is something very basic to most gamma-ray detection techniques. The Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory was named in his honor after it went into orbit in April 1991. It continues to operate today, giving scientists the best look they have ever gotten of the gamma-ray universe So what are gamma-rays and what can they tell us about the cosmos? Gamma-rays are the most energetic form of electromagnetic radiation , with over 10,000 times more energy than visible light photons . If you could see gamma-rays, the night sky would look strange and unfamiliar. The familiar sights of constantly shining stars and galaxies would be replaced by something ever-changing. Your gamma-ray vision would peer into the hearts of solar flares supernovae neutron stars black holes , and active galaxies . Gamma-ray astronomy presents unique opportunities to explore these exotic objects. By exploring the universe at these high energies, scientists can search for new physics, testing theories and performing experiments which are not possible in earth-bound laboratories.

Gamma Rays in a Violent Universe
NASA closed a chapter after nine exciting years of studying the Universe when it forced the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) to drop into Earth's atmosphere on June 4, 2000. The huge astronomy satellite burned, broke up and fell in a shower of hot metal on a remote expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
Shuttle Atlantis had placed the Arthur Holly Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory into a low-Earth circular orbit on April 5, 1991. CGRO was designed to study the Universe in an invisible, high-energy form of light known as gamma rays. Weighing in at just over 35,000 lbs., CGRO was the heaviest NASA science satellite ever to be deployed by a space shuttle into low-Earth orbit.
Compton was the second of NASA's four great observatories in space and the first major space observatory to make a systematic survey of natural sources of gamma rays. Still working in Earth orbit are the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
In the controlled crash on June 4, 2000, NASA engineers radioed orders to the 17-ton Compton GRO to carry out a 30-minute series of rocket firings that let it descend from a high orbit. After the craft began breaking up about 2:14 a.m., it took about 20 minutes for some of the lighter pieces to hit the water. An Air Force observation plane watched some six tons of hot metal splash in the Pacific along a corridor starting 2,500 miles southeast of Hawaii and extending 2,000 miles to the southeast. Among the pieces now at the bottom of the ocean are six 1,800-lb. aluminum I-beams and parts made of titanium, such as 5,000 bolts.
