Compton, Arthur Holly Compton, Arthur Holly (1892-1962), American physicist and Nobel laureate whose studies of X rays led to his discovery in 1922 of the so-called Compton effect. The Compton effect is the change in wavelength of high energy electromagnetic radiation when it scatters off electrons. The discovery of the Compton effect confirmed that electromagnetic radiation has both wave and particle properties, a central principle of quantum theory. Compton was born in Wooster, Ohio, and educated at Wooster College and Princeton University. In 1923 he became professor of physics at the University of Chicago. While at the University of Chicago, Compton directed the laboratory where the first substainable nuclear chain-reaction was performed. ( see Nuclear Energy). Compton also played a role in the development of the atomic bomb (

    amerikanischer Physiker
Arthur Holly Compton wurde am 10. September 1892 in Wooster, Ohio geboren.

    Arthur Compton
Arthur Holly Compton September 10 March 15 ) won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1927) for discovery of the effect named after him. Around , Compton devised a demonstration method for the Earth's rotation. In , Compton studied X-ray scattering. In , Compton found that X-rays wavelength increases due to scattering of the radiant energy by" free electrons ". Scattered quanta have less energy than the quanta of the original ray. This observation furthers the " particle " concept of electromagnetic radiation . Compton also developed the method for observing at the same instant individual scattered X-ray photons and the recoil electrons (developed with A. W. Simon). In Germany, W. Bothe and H. Geiger independently form a similar method.
