Cette découverte étrange de matériel génétique, de fragments d'ADN agissant comme un vrai parasite cellulaire, laisse les chercheurs étonnés : ils voient dans cet ADN égoïste un système de "Lego génétique" dont les briques mobiles se multiplient, se séparent et s'imbriquent pour faire de nouveaux gènes. A première lecture, la publication dans la revue américaine Science (1) d'un article sur l'ADN des rickettsies signé par sept chercheurs de trois laboratoires français ne soulève pas l'enthousiasme: il s'agit en effet ni plus ni moins du séquençage d'une bactérie responsable, chez l'homme de la fièvre boutonneuse pourprée. Ces microbes de la famille des rickettsies, où l'on compte l'agent du typhus, vivent obligatoirement à l'intérieur des cellules des tiques, des poux, des puces. On soupçonne que son rôle est de multiplier les gènes bloc par bloc, et donc d'avoir un rôle essentiel dans l'évolution. C'est un Japonais, Hiroyuki Ogata, qui a effectué le long et fastidieux travail de comparaison génétique à l'origine de cette découverte: une fois établi la carte génétique de Rickettsia Connorrii, il a pu, grâce à des ordinateurs spécialisés, comparer ces séquences génétiques homologues d'un autre membre de cette famille, Rickettsia Prowazekii.

Participants in a 900 round shoot 90 arrows total, 30 from 60 yards, 30 from 50 yards and 30 from 40 yards. This requires great concentration, perhaps even more than shooting and moving from target to target. I think it develops greater discipline and skill in target shooting. For the first time this year we had a senior class. All seniors competing this year set records and we will see if those records fall next year. We had one tiny glitch in the calculations for the winners when the packet of scorecards from the host with the largest number of participants was held up for two weeks in the mail. I sent out frantic letters to all 88 archers only to find the scorecards in my mailbox when I arrived home. I really thank all of you who responded to my pleas for your duplicate scorecards. I had no way of notifying all of you that the originals had arrived safely - finally! But all scores have been tallied, the winners have been notified and their awards are in the mail! Les Caractères, les Gènes et les génomes Une présentation historique Initialement, la génétique formelle traitait quantitativement de la manière dont les caractères sont transmis d'une génération à l'autre. Elle a été initiée par Gregor Mendel vers 1860 avec des études sur les pois. Elle a été redécouverte au début du siècle par Hugo de Vries Carl Correns et Erich Tschermark . Elle a été ensuite étendue aux animaux par Lucien Cuénot et William Bateson . Voyons comment elle a débuté avec Mendel. Pour ses expériences, Mendel a choisi des plantes possédant des propriétés particulières qui lui ont facilité l'analyse. - Il fallait qu'elles arborent des caractères constants et facilement différentiables. - Il fallait qu'il puisse contrôler les croisements et en particulier qu'il puisse éviter les contaminations de pollen venant de l'extérieur. - Les hybrides fabriqués devaient être aussi fertiles que les parents. Ceci a conduit aux définitions suivantes (en bleu) que nous utilisons encore actuellement : Définition d'un caractère : C'est une caractéristique morphologique ou biologique pour laquelle on dispose de spécimens qui montrent une différence plus ou moins héritable , c'est à dire se transmettant d'une génération à une autre Exemple : - le système des groupes sanguins ABO ou rh+/rh- - la couleur de la peau pour ces deux caractères l'hérédité est stricte - la taille - le poids - la couleur des yeux et des cheveux - les nuances de la peau (peau blanche ou mat) pour ces caractères l'hérédité est moins stricte ou plus complexe
