D.12 PEARL MARY TERESA RICHARDS CRAIGIE PAPERS, 1888-1911 1 box. Pearl Craigie (1867-1906) was the daughter of a New York merchant who settled in London soon after she was born. She was educated in England, and was married for a brief time to an Englishman, Reginald Walpole Craigie, by whom she had a son. In 1891, she published her first book, a short epigrammatic novel, under the pseudonym of John Oliver Hobbes, a name she continued to use to the end of her career. Her novels of society life were very popular, but by 1897 the tone had begun to change. She then produced novels which contained Roman Catholic themes, reflecting her deep commitment to the Catholic Church, which she joined in 1892, shortly after she left her husband. She also wrote critical essays and plays. The most successful of the plays was the comedy The Ambassador , produced by Sir George Alexander in 1898. The collection consists of letters written to Mrs. Craigie by various members of London society, and of the London theatrical and literary worlds concerning her novels and plays. The largest groups are those from James E. C. Welldon, headmaster of Harrow and Bishop of Calcutta, and those from Sir George Alexander, who produced her plays. There are also letters addressed to Mrs. Craigie's father, John Morgan Richards, concerning the "Life" of Mrs. Craigie which he edited after her untimely death at age 38.

THE origin of the negotiations between the United States and other powers leading to the conclusion of the so-called Briand-Kellogg Pact for the reununciation of war is well known. Beginning with an expression of good-will in M. Briand's note of April 6, 1927, commemorating the entry of the United States into the war and expressing France's willingness to conclude a treaty renouncing war between France and the United States, the negotiations developed rapidly. On June 20, 1927, the French Foreign Minister presented the draft of a treaty embodying his proposal, providing for a condemnation of "recourse to war" and renouncing war as between France and the United States as an "instrument of their national policy." The settlement of all disputes was never to be sought "except by pacific means." On December 28, 1927, Mr. Kellogg proposed to the French ambassador the extension of the proposed declaration to all the principal Powers. It was argued in the United States that, if the treaty were signed by the United States and France alone, it would be a treaty of alliance. In his accompanying draft of a treaty, Mr. Kellogg recommended the outright and unconditional renunciation of war and the solution of disputes by pacific means only.

This book is a collection of the diary letters of Austen Chamberlain from 1916 to 1937. These letters provide a valuable insight into the political life of one of the leading Conservative politicians of the inter-war period, and constitute a detailed record of Conservative and national politics at this time. They provide particularly valuable personal accounts of key events such as the negotiations of the Irish Treaty in 1921, the troubles leading to the Carlton Club revolt of October 1922, the Locarno agreements of 1925, the leadership crisis of 1930–31, and the backbench campaign against the German threat in the 1930s. Chamberlain felt free to express his most candid feelings and emotions in the privacy of these diary letters and, as a result, they throw much valuable light upon arguably one of the most misjudged politicians of the age, and one who has certainly been overshadowed by his more famous father and half-brother.

    Neville Chamberlain (1869-1940)
Neville föddes 1869 i England.
