with spectacular award diploma , to Sir James Chadwick one of the fathers of the A-bomb, for discovering the neutron in 1932. This award is one of the most significant imaginable 20th Century historical objects. It is not only of museum quality, but is of the quality that museums are built around, and is of a magnitude that could warrant the creation of a museum with this as the collection's central object. Chadwick's discovery is generally considered one of the greatest discoveries ever, and was listed by Time Magazine as one of the 100 milestones of the 20th Century.
Normally, Nobel medals and diplomas of this magnitude are considered national treasures and remain in the hands of the recipient's family or are displayed prominently in a national museum. A good example of the treatment accorded to Nobel Prizes of this magnitude is the story of the George Marshall 1953 Nobel Peace Prize at the George C. Marshall Museum on the campus of the Virginia Military Institute. In this case, the Marshall family has temporarily lent this Nobel Prize to the H.S. Truman Presidential Museum, where this object became the most important piece around which the museum exhibit revolves, as is reflected on its web site The Chadwick Nobel is the only Nobel medal for sale on the world-wide web, and would be appropriate as the backbone of a museum illustrating the history and destiny of cutting-edge science, just as the Marshall Nobel is the focal point of the Marshall WWII museum. James Chadwick S ir James Chadwick was born in 1891 in Manchester, England and was educated there at Victoria University. He was a British physicist, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1935, and discoverer of the neutron. This discovery led to the development of nuclear fission and eventually the atomic bomb. In 1909 Chadwick began his tutelage under another British physicist, Lord Ernest Rutherford. After World War I the two scientists went to the University of Cambridge where a bountiful work relationship developed continued until 1935. As one of the most prominent British proponents of the development of the atomic bomb, Chadwick was invited to work in the United States at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He collaborated with other physicist on the atomic bomb project from 1943 until 1945. Chadwick was knighted in 1945 and died in 1974. Aristotle

Edwin Chadwick (1800-1890)
Marjie Bloy Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow, National University of Singapore.
Edwin Chadwick was born on 24 January 1800 at Longsight near Manchester. He was the son of James Chadwick and grandson of Andrew Chadwick, a friend of John Wesley. James Chadwick was a man of many talents he taught botany and music to John Dalton, the chemist; was an associate of the advanced liberal politicians of his time; edited the Statesman newspaper during the imprisonment of its editor; became editor of the Western Times and finally settled as a journalist in New York, where he died at the age of eighty-four. Edwin Chadwick received his early education at Longsight and Stockport, and when his family moved to London in 1810 his education was continued by private tutors. He then trained as a lawyer and subsequently entered the Inner Temple, where he was called to the Bar on 26 November 1830. While pursuing his legal studies he 'made ends meet' by working as a journalist, writing for the Morning Herald and other papers. This developed his techniques of enquiry, precise thought and his flair for writing.

The moon does have a far side which is impossible to see from the earth, but it doesn't mean that it's always dark. Each side of the moon is dark for no longer than 15 days at a time. Q. Where does sound come from? A. The air is always filled with sound waves. All things give off vibrations, but some have a low frequency which most cannot hear. The reason: it may take 3 minutes to make a single vibration. They may be caused by earthquakes and storms. Chadwick, James: 1891-1974

James Chadwick A Description of James Chadwick He was born in 1891, on October 20, and was the eldest of three sons, and a sister who died earlier on . He went to Manchester University, intending to read Mathematics, but accidently signed up to do Physics, and he then went on to graduate with first class honours. In 1914 he went over to Berlin, to Reichsanstalt, where he made his first discovery. He was interned in Germany during the first World War, which damaged his health, and he suffered from gastric problems. 1918 is when he returned to Manchester. In 1919 he went on to Cambridge , and worked in the Cavendish laboratory untill 1935. He made all of his discoveries between 1921 and 1934 while he was at the Cavendish Laboratoies. What Did he Find Out? Before any of his discoveries, he knew every thing about the atom that every other scientist knew in those times, he found this out by reading different articles, and listening to certain lectures. The main things that he knew was that the atom only contained the Electron and the Proton, and they thought the nucleus only had room for the Proton. Just 2 years before Chadwick had his main discovery, a scientist called Wolfgang Pauli suggested that he had found a neutron, it was a light partictle which he thought existed in the nucleus. But when Chadwick had his discovery of the neutron, then another scientist by the name of Enrico Fermi realised that Pauli's paticle was just created by Beta decay. So Chadwick found out that there was a new part to the atom, the neutron, and this lead to the new, extended model of the atom, which nobody had seen before.

born: 20th October, 1891
died: 1974 James Chadwick was born in Cheshire, England. He attended Manchester High School prior to entering Manchester University in 1908; he graduated from the Honours School of Physics in 1911 and spent the next two years under Professor (later Lord) Rutherford in the Physical Laboratory in Manchester, where he worked on various radioactivity problems, gaining his M.Sc. degree in 1913. That same year he was awarded the 1851 Exhibition Scholarship and proceeded to Berlin to work in the Physikalisch Technische Reichsanstalt at Charlottenburg under Professor H. Geiger. During World War I, he was interned in the Zivilgefangenenlager, Ruhleben. After the war, in 1919, he returned to England to accept the Wollaston Studentship at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and to resume work under Rutherford, who in the meantime had moved to the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge. Rutherford had succeeded that year in disintegrating atoms by bombarding nitrogen with alpha particles, with the emission of a proton. This was the first artificial nuclear transformation. In Cambridge, Chadwick joined Rutherford in accomplishing the transmutation of other light elements by bombardment with alpha particles, and in making studies of the properties and structure of atomic nuclei.

Nuclear Chemistry
1. Discovery of the Neutron (1932) The story begins in 1932, with the discovery of the neutron by Sir James Chadwick, an English physicist. Lord Rutherford (right) at Cambridge Sir James Chadwick (Courtesy of the American Institute of Physics) Until 1932, the atom was known to consist of a positively charged nucleus surrounded by enough negatively charged electrons to make the atom electrically neutral. Most of the atom was empty space, with its mass concentrated in a tiny nucleus. The nucleus was thought to contain both protons and electrons because the proton (otherwise known as the hydrogen ion, H ) was the lightest known nucleus and because electrons were emitted by the nucleus in beta decay . In addition to the beta particles, certain radioactive nuclei emitted positively charged alpha particles and neutral gamma radiation. The symbols for these emissions are or e or He , and Twelve years earlier, Lord Ernest Rutherford, a pioneer in atomic structure, had postulated the existence of a neutral particle, with the approximate mass of a proton, that could result from the capture of an electron by a proton. This postulation stimulated a search for the particle. However, its electrical neutrality complicated the search because almost all experimental techniques of this period measured charged particles. In 1928, a German physicist, Walter Bothe, and his student, Herbert Becker, took the initial step in the search. They bombarded beryllium with alpha particles emitted from polonium and found that it gave off a penetrating, electrically neutral radiation, which they interpreted to be high-energy gamma photons.
