WHAT IS THE RNA WORLD THEORY?
THE RNA WORLD THEORY states that during the evolution of life on Earth, RNA was the precursor molecule (i.e. came before DNA/RNA/PROTEIN) of basic biochemical functions for early life forms. If you are comfortable with the basics, click to the site listed RNA WORLD for further details about the RNA World Theory.

NATIONAL/FOREIGN If Thomas R. Cech, was surprised that he won this year's Nobel Prize for Chemistry, his colleagues and mentors were not. There was reason to suspect he was headed for scientific glory while he was still a schoolboy, winning state science fairs in Iowa year after year. Cech, a lanky 41-year-old Colorado resident, reminisced about those early years while sipping champagne with colleagues at the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge yesterday. He had just spoken on the phone with a reporter from a Des Moines newspaper, who remembered that Cech won a science fair in eastern Iowa while still in junior high. When one of his colleagues asked the topic of his winning entry, Cech joked, "I don't remember. I was in so many science fairs." Cech, born in Chicago, took that all-consuming passion for science to Grinnell College in Iowa, where he received a BA in chemistry, and then to the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned a doctorate. He joined the faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1978 after doing a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT. Many of the scientists who gathered around Cech yesterday remembered him fondly from his days at MIT.

So far, all repressor molecules that have been characterized are proteins. But a new study in the March 18 Nature describes a novel catalytic RNA that controls its own gene expression. These findings, say the study's authors, point to the gene control mechanisms employed by primitive organisms and suggest that modern cells retain some of these systems. All metabolite-binding riboswitches so far discovered induce a structural change in the messenger RNA that controls gene expression by straightforward mechanisms, said Ron Breaker The Scientist David M.J. Lilley Scott K. Silverman Thomas R. Cech , from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in an accompanying News and Views article . The ribozyme is upstream of the glmS mRNA, which generates the small sugar glucosamine-6-phosphate, involved in cell wall biosynthesis. Eukaryotic gene control systems typically are far more complex than metabolite-triggered self-destruction of mRNAs, said Breaker, but this self-cutting ribozyme may persist today because the ribozyme is simply very good at what it does: it recognizes its target metabolite with great precision. http://certik.ruk.cuni.cz/press/aktualita/archliv/2002/0210/021004-01c.html
Professor THOMAS ROBERT CECH
is the American Cancer Society Professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, simultaneously a professor of biochemistry, biophysics and genetics at the University of Colorado, Denver, and since January 2000 the President of the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute where he has been working since 1988 as a researcher. He was born on December 8, 1947, in Chicago - all his ancestors came to the USA from Bohemia. Thomas R. Cech grew in Iowa City (Iowa) and studied at the Grinnel College where he became interested in physical chemistry. After receiving his B.A. degree in 1970, he continued his chemistry studies at the University of California at Berkeley and was awarded his PhD in 1975. His interest started to turn toward biology during this time and the turn was completed in the years 1975 to 1977 when he worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Mary-Lou Pardue at the National Cancer Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1978 he came to the Department of Chemistry, University of Colorado at Boulder, where his activities are centred until now. Professor Cech has exceptionally contributed to the development of molecular sciences, using his broad and high-quality scientific background ranging from chemical physics to pure biology. His fundamental discovery, made at the turn of the seventies and eighties, is the finding that ribonucleic acid that had been considered as a passive carrier of genetic information, can actually exhibit enzymic activity. These enzyme reactions are important for life and the corresponding catalysts have been termed ribozymes. This discovery has not only principal importance for basic research as it has been demonstrated that enzymic activity is not limited to proteins, but also has wide practical impact, especially in medicine.
