Most Recent Recipient
Octave DuTemple
Octave Du Temple, a native of the Copper Country, received bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering from Michigan Tech in 1948 and 1949. His studies were interrupted by military service during World War II, when he taught flying and navigation. He also studied at Northwestern University, where he earned a master's degree in business administration in 1955. Du Temple worked at the Argonne National Laboratory for several years, and in 1958 he was appointed executive director of the American Nuclear Society, a position he held for 32 years. He has travelled and lectured extensively around the world on the peaceful applications of nuclear energy. He is a member of the International Nuclear Energy Academy, an honorary fellow of the Institute of Nuclear Engineers in London, an honorary life member of the Chinese Nuclear Society and is the former secretary of the Pacific Nuclear Council. Currently he is executive director emeritus of the American Nuclear Society. The society's headquarters, in LaGrange, Ill., is dedicated in his name.

Calvin R. Melvin, Appellant, v. DOCKET NUMBER PH-0752-98-0050-C-3 United States Postal Service, Agency. DATE: June 2, 2000 Calvin R. Melvin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, pro se. Miriam F. O’Leary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the agency. BEFORE Beth S. Slavet, Acting Chairman
Susanne T. Marshall, Member OPINION AND ORDER
BACKGROUND
  • Melvin v. U.S. Postal Service Melvin v. U.S. Postal Service , MSPB Docket No. PH-0752-98-0050-B-1, slip op. at 3-4 (Remand Initial Decision, Dec. 2, 1998). The administrative judge ordered the agency to cancel the removal, retroactively return the appellant to his former position, and issue a check to the appellant for the appropriate amount of back pay within 60 calendar days after the date the initial decision became final. Id . at 5. Because neither party filed a petition for review of this decision, it became the final decision of the Board on January 6, 1999. See On March 4, 1999, the appellant filed a petition for enforcement with the regional office in which he requested sanctions against the agency for its failure to comply with the terms of the initial decision. First Compliance File (FCF), Tab 1. In response to an acknowledgment order issued by the administrative judge, the agency indicated that it had sent PS Form 8038, Employee Statement to Recover Back Pay, to the appellant on March 18, 1999. FCF, Tab 2. The appellant filed a second petition for enforcement on April 30, 1999, claiming that the agency had delayed his payment. Second Compliance File (SCF), Tab 1. The parties subsequently settled the appellant’s petitions for enforcement by executing an agreement whereby the appellant agreed to withdraw his appeal in exchange for the agency’s agreement to compensate the appellant as a transitional employee for the period from July 1, 1996, through January 11, 1999. FCF, Tab 3. It appears that the parties subsequently amended this settlement agreement to provide for payment for the period from July 1, 1996, through November 30, 1997.

Biography Submitted by Dr. Calvin to the Nobel Committee

Professor K. Myrbaumlck, member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences:
Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Dr. Melvin Calvin, October 26, 1961. As opposed to the heterotrophic organisms, the organisms belonging to the second group, the so-called autotrophic organisms, i.e. the green plants and certain bacteria, do not require organic material supplied from without. They synthesize organic compounds, primarily carbohydrates, from simple substances, carbon dioxide and water, substances that in themselves, do not contain any calories. The energy needed for the synthesis is supplied by light which is absorbed by the organisms and subsequently converted by them from light energy into chemical energy. The sequence of reactions by which carbon dioxide and water are converted to carbohydrate is called carbon dioxide assimilation or, taking into account the role of light energy, photosynthesis.
It becomes obvious that photosynthesis not only provides an explanation for the existence of the autotrophic organisms but also furnishes food for man and animals. In other words, photosynthesis is the absolute prerequisite for all life on earth and the most fundamental of all biochemical reactions. It has been estimated that plants and microorganisms on earth transform about 6,000 tons of carbon from carbon dioxide to carbohydrate per second, with at least four-fifths of this amount contributed by organisms in the oceans.

en:Melvin Calvin Melvin Calvin 8. April in Saint Paul, Minnesota 8.

He then spent the next four years doing postdoctoral work at the University of Manchester . He married Genevieve Jemtegaard in 1942, and they had three children, two daughters and a son. Calvin joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley as an instructor in 1937 and was promoted to Professor of Chemistry in 1947. In 1963 he was given the additional title of Professor of Molecular Biology. He was founder and Director of the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics and simultaneously Associate Director of Berkeley Radiation Laboratory , where he conducted much of his research until his retirement in 1980.
