was born on May 1, 1852, at Petilla in Aragon, Spain. As a boy he was apprenticed first to a barber and then to a cobbler. He himself wished to be an artist - his gift for draughtsmanship is evident in his published works. His father, however, who was Professor of Applied Anatomy in the University of Saragossa, persuaded him to study medicine, which he did, chiefly under the direction of his father. (Later, he made drawings for an atlas of anatomy which his father was preparing, but which was never published.) In 1880 he began to publish scientific works, of which the following are the most important: (Manual of normal histology and micrographic technique), 1889 (2nd ed., 1893). A summary of this manual recast with additions, appeared under the title . (Elements of histology, etc.), 1897; Manual de (Manual of general pathological anatomy), 1890 (3rd ed., 1900). In addition may be cited: (New ideas on the fine anatomy of the nerve centres), 1894; Textura del sistema nervioso del hombre y de los vertebrados (Textbook on the nervous system of man and the vertebrates), 1897-1899;

How did Cajal Hop a Ride Aboard Neurolab?
(Submitted by Dr. Kerry Walton)
Original glass microscope slides prepared by the "Father of Neuroscience", Santiago Ramon y Cajal are the first historically important scientific artifacts to be flown in space. You can find out who Santiago Ramon y Cajal is, see the slides and some drawings of nerve cells made by Dr. Cajal. Copies of these original drawings were also stowed aboard Columbia. But how did these slides and drawings get aboard? While preparing for Neurolab, the science teams met every 6 months. So far, there have been seven of these meetings called Investigator Working Group (IWG) meetings. At one IWG, we discussed ways to bring the excitement we felt about studying the nervous system in space to other scientists, to school children, and to the general public. Dr. Dave Williams, a Canadian astronaut and Neurolab Mission Specialist, and Dr. Muriel Ross, a Neurolab scientist, both suggested that we do something to honor Dr. Cajal. Everyone at the meeting agreed that this was a good idea. But, to have it happen, we needed the help of some key people. Since the slides and drawings were an official a loan from the Spanish government to the American government, the project grew very complex. Mary Anne Frey, Neurolab Program Scientist, tasked David Liskowsky with ensuring that this aspect of "The Cajal Project" was on track. His major contact in Spain was the Minister for Education and Culture, Ms. Esperanza Aguirre. The process of getting the slides to Houston and then on-board the shuttle at Cape Canaveral took almost a year.

DR. SANTIAGO RAMON Y CAJAL
Born in Spain, he did all his studies there and rose in stature to become Professor of Anatomy at Valencia, later histology in normal and pathologic histology at Barcelona and then to Madrid as Professor of normal histology and pathological anatomy. He and Camillo Golgi received the Nobel Prize in 1906 for introduction of the silver-chromate stain. Later he set out carefully to explore the finer aspects of the brain. With his reduced silver nitrate technique he demonstrated neurons and their connections so easily. His introduction of his gold chloride- mercury bichloride technique to demonstrate astrocytes was a monumental contribution as was his work on degeneration and regeneration of the nervous system later. He will be remembered as a world famous neuropathologist.
