47. The Geelong College - About Us
Victoria. burnet, sir frank macfarlane, 191316, Director of the Walterand Eliza Hall Institute, Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine.
http://www.geelongcollege.vic.edu.au/about_hist.html
History
A Brief History of The Geelong College
The first Principal was Mr George Morrison, MA, a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and a man of outstanding scholastic and business ability. After three years the committee assigned the College to the ownership of Mr Morrison.
Mr George Morrison
In 1871 the school moved into its new, purpose-built building on an initial six acre site on Newtown Hill - now the Senior School campus. The 1871 building was designed by the prominent Geelong and Western District architects Davidson and Henderson in a style known as Victorian Eclectic. It incorporates Gothic and Italianate motifs. Subsequent buildings, up to the present, reflect the various styles of the time, but subsequent College Architects, Lt Col F. C. Purnell, Mr Philip Hudson and for the last 40 years, McGlashan Everist have succeeded in achieving a harmony and integrity of style throughout the Senior School.
Mr George Morrison presided over the College from 1861 until 1898. In 1891 the University of Aberdeen recognised his work in education by conferring upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws. In 1898, Dr Morrison was succeeded by his son, Mr Norman Morrison, who remained Headmaster until his accidental death in 1909. In 1908, after 44 years as a privately owned school, the College was transferred back to the Presbyterian Church and governed by a Council set up by the Church. In 1908 the College became a member of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria.

Australian Fluoridation News Nov-Dec 2003 Edition Homepage English-Arabic English-Other Google ... Copy List Science, Scientists and Fluoridation By Glen S.R. Walker Science becomes a question of "who do you believe" and the answer is always heavily weighted down on the side of "accepted" experts, their statements usually more referenced to their privileged positions than the science under consideration, or perhaps their undivided loyalty to unnamed colleagues or groups. Most in such positions, follow the leader, in childlike procession of safety in numbers of stronger longer leaders. However, safety in many aspects is a case of serious consideration, especially when faced with evidence of people who preferred honest science and honest reporting only to discover their services are no longer wanted. There is no promotion or job security in openly challenging "the establishment's thinking and actions," their word is elite officialdom, the emblem of authority and dictatorial power that must not be questioned. Many important scientific opportunities are for the "Wannabes", even "Coodabeenes", but without original thinking on health subjects that are privy to the inner sanctum of professional and political hierarchy, where plans are energised.

Australia: Biological weapons
The Australian Department of Defence formed the New Weapons and Equipment Development Committee soon after the end of WW2. Documents in the National Archives, declassified in 1998, revealed the extent to which Australia considered the development of biological weapons in the 1940s and 50s. Secretary of the Department F.G. Sheddon sought the advice of leading microbiologist Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet in December 1946. Burnet was Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research, and won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1960. Sheddon asked whether Australia had the capability to develop biological weapons that would work in tropical Asia without spreading to Australia's more temperate population centres. Burnet wrote a comprehensive memo to the Department of Defence in which he said Australia should develop biological weapons that would work in tropical Asia without spreading to Australia's more temperate population centres.
"Specifically to the Australian situation, the most effective counter-offensive to threatened invasion by overpopulated Asiatic countries would be directed towards the destruction by biological or chemical means of tropical food crops and the dissemination of infectious disease capable of spreading in tropical but not under Australian conditions."
In a meeting with Sheddon in January 1947, Burnet argued that Australia's temperate climate could give it a significant military advantage.

THE MUELLER MEDAL
Background The Mueller Medal was initiated at the ninth meeting of ANZAAS Council in Hobart, 1902 and was designed by Baldwin Spencer, a friend and protege of the Baron; it shows the subject solemnly contemplating a spray of acacia on the obverse with, on the reverse, a waratah flower and the name of the recipient. It honours Baron Sir Ferdinand von Mueller, one of Australia's great pioneers of exploration and science, who arrived in Australia in 1847 and was the Government Botanist of Victoria for 44 years. The Medal is awarded at the annual ANZAAS Congress to a scientist who is the author of important contributions to anthropological, botanical, geological or zoological science, preferably with special reference to Australia.
