Burnet received his medical degree in 1923 from the University of Melbourne and was a research fellow (1926-27) at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, London. He became assistant director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research at Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1928 and later (1944-65) was its director and professor of experimental medicine at the University of Melbourne. He was knighted in 1951. Burnet, in addition to his work on human transplants, discovered a method for identifying bacteria by the viruses (bacteriophages) that attack them, and he developed a techniquenow standard laboratory practiceof culturing viruses in living chick embryos. He increased knowledge of the way influenza viruses cause infection and did significant work on such diseases as myxomatosis, Murray Valley (now known as Australian Arbo-encephalitis) fever, and Q fever. He isolated the causal organism of Q fever, Rickettsia burneti Coxiella burneti Among his publications are Viruses and Man Principles of Animal Virology The Clonal Selection Theory of Acquired Im munity Immunological Surveillance (1970), and

Sir Macfarlane Burnet: A Pillar of Modern Immunology
Article # : Section : NATURAL SCIENCE Issue Date : 3,216 Words Author : Vivianne de Vahl Davis
It is given to some to achieve greatness in one field of scientific endeavor; it is given to very few to attain greatness in a number of such fields. Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet was one of those few. During his career spanning four decades, he made seminal contributions to bacteriology, virology, and immunology, and produced fundamental advances in several areas of clinical medicine. In retirement he wrote about problems of aging and cancer, and expounded on his philosophy of life. He became a commentator on such issues of public concern as smoking and the export of uranium from Australia.
There are many who think that his earliest work on baceriophages, done in the 1920s, was his finest, but it was his highly successful virus work during the 1930s and '40s that established his reputation and brought him election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1942. Burnet later earned the Royal Medal of that society in 1947 and a British knighthood in 1951.

    Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet
The Australian virologist Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet (1899-1985) was known world-wide for his scientific research on viruses and immunology. Together with the British Sir Peter Medawar, he received the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1960 for discovering acquired immunological tolerance. Burnet was born in Traralgon, Victoria and earned a degree from the University of Melbourne. At first he became pathologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. In 1926 he went to London to spend a year at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine. While in London he earned a degree from the University of London. During his second trip to London, Burnet worked at the National Institute for Medical Research, where he developed a technique for cultivating viruses using chick embryos. From 1944 to 1965 Burnet was director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne. Here Burnet discovered that the immune system recognizes and attacks foreign invaders, but ignores the body's own tissue. Peter Madawar proved Burnet correct in several experiments.
