Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet ("Mac", as he was generally known to immunologists) was born in 1899 and died in 1985. This year (1999) we celebrate the centenary of his birth. Much will be written and spoken about him. Encapsulating his life and contributions in a few pages is something of a challenge. Burnet's Early Scientific Career Burnet was born in the small country town of Traralgon, Victoria. Having spent three months there as a resident medical officer, I can vouch for the fact that Traralgon is a dull place. However, Burnet had a happy and uneventful childhood, and in later life he retained his affection for the bush. He went on to study medicine at Melbourne University, where he graduated in 1922 with high honours. During his year as resident at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, he aspired to become a clinical neurologist, but his mentors felt that his talents lay elsewhere, and steered him towards laboratory research. (Rolf Zinkernagel also aspired to become a neurologist, and it is fortunate that fate also took him in a different direction). Burnet became registrar in pathology, and thus gained entry to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, with which he remained associated for the next forty years until he retired as Director in 1965. His first bench work began with diagnostic bacteriology and serology. Even at this early stage he was an acute observer.

5. Sir Frank MacFarlane Burnet - Biography
sir frank macfarlane burnet – Biography. sir frank macfarlane burnetwas born at Traralgon, Victoria, Australia, on September 3rd, 1899.
http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1960/burnet-bio.html
Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet was born at Traralgon, Victoria, Australia, on September 3rd, 1899. He is the son of the Manager of the branch of the Colonial Bank in that town. He was educated at the Victoria State Schools and at Geelong College , completing his medical course at the University of Melbourne , where he graduated M.B., B.S., in 1922, and M.D., in 1923.
In 1923, Burnet went to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of the University of Melbourne to do research work on the agglutinin reactions in typhoid fever. He was from 1923-1924 Resident Pathologist at the Melbourne Hospital.
In 1926 he was awarded a Beit Fellowship for Medical Research and worked for a year at the Lister Institute, London.
In 1932 he spent a year at the National Institute for Medical Research , Hampstead, London. Otherwise, apart from many visits to various countries to give lectures or for other purposes, he has worked continuously at the Hall Institute in Melbourne.
In 1944 he became Director of this Institute and Professor of Experimental Medicine in the University of Melbourne.
It is impossible to give, in a brief space, an adequate idea of the range and fundamental importance of Burnet's work. His work on the agglutinins of typhoid fever mentioned above was followed by the work on viruses for which he is nowadays justly famous. In 1935 he isolated a strain of influenza A virus in Australia, and subsequently did much work on serological variations of the influenza virus and on Australian strains of the swine influenza. He also published papers on variations in the virulence of influenza virus and on the mutation rates in it, which he calculated.

Frank Macfarlane Burnet 1899-1985
By Frank Fenner With the death of Frank Macfarlane Burnet on 31 August 1985, Australia lost its greatest biologist, a man who had spent virtually all of a long working life in Australia. His experimental work on bacteriophages and animal viruses, especially influenza virus, resulted in major discoveries concerning their nature and replication, and he was a pioneer in the application of ecological principles to viral diseases. He proposed two concepts in immunology-acquired immunological tolerance and the clonal selection theory of antibody production-which proved to be of critical importance in stimulating research and led to a more complete understanding of immune processes. In the later stages of his life he lectured and wrote extensively about problems of human biology and human affairs, ageing and cancer. He was a Foundation Fellow and, from 1965 to 1969, President of the Australian Academy of Science.
Early Life
Macfarlane Burnet, who from childhood and through out his life was known as 'Mac' to his close friends, was the second of seven children. At the time of his birth, his father was manager of the Traralgon branch of the Colonial Bank. In 1909, he was transferred and moved with the family to Terang, in western Victoria. In both places young Burnet went to the local primary school. As related in his autobiography, Burnet retained vivid memories of his life as a boy in Terang, where he returned for vacations until he was in his twenties. He was a shy boy, but revelled in the opportunities to wander in the nearby countryside, especially near Lake Terang, where he was greatly interested in the variety of wild life to be seen. He became a member of the Boy Scouts in 1910, soon after the movement was founded in Victoria, and enjoyed the associated camping and outdoor activities.

Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet
OM, KBE,MD,PhD,FRS,FAA,FRACP,FRCP (1899-1985)
by Mr. Peter Burke (M. Fullard) In November, 1999, Mr. Jim Hood welcomed our Guest Speaker, Mr. Peter Burke, surgeon, of Moe. He dedicated his address to a special friend, Brian Harris, who was the youngest member ever of the Traralgon and District Historical Society. (Sadly, Brian was killed in a car accident in 1998).) Frank Macfarlane Burnet was born in the residence at the Colonial Bank, in Franklin Street, Traralgon on 3rd September 1899. He was the second of 6 children and his father was Manager of the bank. He was a quiet, very shy child, and a bit of a loner. He attended the local State School and he didn't appear to be exceptional at this stage. He wandered in the bush and along Traralgon Creek, to observe white-eyes, butterflies, yabbies and beetles.
(Photo left, Macfarlane Burnet, as a boy, with sisters Doris and Anne.) When he was 9, his father was transferred to Terang, and here he continued with his beetle collection. His parents subscribed to "Natural History" and by now he was a voracious reader. The Presbyterian minister recognized that he was very clever, and told his parents that they must educate him. He was a boarder at Geelong College where he was Dux. He then went to Ormond College and graduated at the University of Melbourne in 1922, in medicine. The first in his course was Dr. James Moore Andrew who spent his whole life working in Yallourn and Moe. Macfarlane Burnet was second.

Burnet, Sir Frank Macfarlane
Australian physician, an authority on immunology and viral diseases such as influenza, poliomyelitis, and cholera. He shared the 1960 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with immunologist Peter Medawar for his work on skin grafting.
Burnet was born in E Victoria and studied at Melbourne and London universities. From 1927 he was associated with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research in Melbourne, becoming its director 1944.
Burnet was the first to investigate the multiplication mechanism of bacteriophages (viruses that attack bacteria) and devised a method for identifying bacteria by the bacteriophages that attack them. In 1932 he developed a technique for growing and isolating viruses in chick embryos; this was to be used as a standard laboratory procedure for more than 20 years.
In 1949 Burnet predicted that an individual's ability to produce a particular antibody to a particular antigen was not innate, but developed during the individual's life. In 1951 Medawar carried out the experiments that confirmed this theory.

Frank Macfarlane Burnet
