Peace and International House Students with a special interest in Peace Studies, not necessarily majors or minors, are encouraged to live in this spacious and attractive residential community. The house, named for Ralph J. Bunche (1963 honorary alumnus), Nobel Peace Prize Recipient and Undersecretary of the U.N., houses 26 students. It has a large dining hall, a library of Peace Studies literature, and a reading room. The basement houses a student-run coffee house, Cecelie's, with live music. The Peace Studies Program Assistant, usually a recent graduate, spends a year living in the house, helping with both the academic and non-academic programs.
Bunche House residents strive to integrate social and intellectual life in a supportive community which fosters an understanding of peace and social justice. Student groups meet regularly at Bunche House on disarmament, world hunger, and human rights issues. Residents plan a program of films, visiting speakers, conflict simulation games, discussions, community meals, and other activities, many of which are open to the entire campus community. Ralph Johnson Bunche was born on August 7, 1904 in Detroit, Michigan. Bunche's family was poor and his father moved from city to city looking for work. Ralph attended Barstow School in Toledo, Ohio and sold newspapers to add to the family income. Bunche would later recall that, "My childhood days were poor days, but happy ones and filled with music." Ralph's mother died when he was thirteen years old, after which his maternal grandmother reared him.

Prepared Remarks Inaugural Dinner Address for the Ralph Bunche Chair for Africa Policy Studies By Princeton N. Lyman Council on Foreign Relations New York June 12, 2003 Thank you very much, Frank. Thank you Pete Peterson. I am deeply honored to have been selected for the Ralph Bunche Chair. It is a major responsibility! The establishment of this chair is very significant. It is a strong statement by the Council that Africa must be a permanent, significant focus of American foreign policy. That is, strangely, something new in the world of policy analysis. This is not just the first permanent chair in Africa policy studies in the Council on Foreign Relations; it is the only endowed chair for Africa policy in any foreign policy institution in the United States. It is also a tribute to Les Gelb, the President of the Council until the end of this month! Les made this happen. He determined to make it happen and would not rest until it did. Over the past year, he organized, cajoled, persuaded, proselytized, charmed, and seduced everyone he could reach to make sure that this chair would be funded and established by the end of 2002. You just had to see Les in action to know how persuasive he was. It is indeed one more great tribute to him, among so many achievements in his leadership of the Council, that he has put Africa firmly and fixedly on the radar screen of American foreign policy. I also want to pay tribute to Carl Ware and Vincent Mai who co-chaired the fund raising committee. I want to express appreciation from all of us who care about Africa and its importance to American policy, to Les, to Carl and Vincent and to all those individuals and corporations that contributed and made the endowment possible. Thank you all very much.

Ralph Bunche
by Mary-Ossei Anto The name of Ralph Bunche is unfamiliar in too many textbooks.
He is a hero of world peace and, in actuality, devised and implemented
the mediation principles that now govern all UN peacekeeping efforts. Born in 1903 into a poor, black family in Detroit, Michigan, Ralph Bunche became an ambitious individual, a scholar on racism, a skilled diplomat and tireless peacemaker and humanitarian. He co-authored an important book on racism, fought against all forms of hatred, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950. He was Undersecretary-General of the United Nations; negotiated four peace agreements that ended the 1948-49 Arab-Israeli War; and was responsible for the first UN program on peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Indeed, Ralph Bunche was a man who rose from modest circumstances to become the foremost international mediator and peacekeeper of his time. This is his inspiring story. —Ralph Bunche Diplomats, even those renowned in their lifetimes, are destined, it seems, to be forgotten by fickle publics. So it has proved with Ralph Bunche. In 1950, the year he won the Nobel Peace Prize, New York City gave him a ticker tape parade on Broadway. Today, he has faded from the memory of mos t. This unjustly forgotten Nobel Laureate deserves recognition more than anyone else for formulating the U.N. principles of peacekeeping. He also helped shape the United Nations Charter and negotiated the Israeli-Arab armistice lines that endured from 1948 until the Six-Day War in 1967. His biographer and longtime U.N. colleague, Brian Urquhart, called Bunche (who died in 1971) the most remarkable public servant he had known. He left his mark at home as well as abroad. An African American, born a century ago in Detroit, Bunche was an early campaigner for civil rights and a principal collaborator with the eminent Swedish sociologist Gunnar Myrdal in preparing the landmark study

Translate this page ralph bunche sah die Führung und das Engagement der Vereinigten Staaten in multilateralen internationalen organisationen als unerlässlich für die Erreichung
http://www.unpa.unvienna.org/rbunche03/ueber_bunche.html
Peacekeeping’’.
