Ralph J. Bunche
Also known as: Ralph J(ohnson) Bunche, Ralph Johnson Bunche, Ralph Bunche
Statesman, diplomat, scholar, government official Contemporary Black Biography , called him "a UN mercenary, a man with an undistinguished mind and rather bad personal manner." Nevertheless, he became the highest ranking black American in the United Nations. Bunche traces his mother's family history back to slavery. His greatgrandfather, James H. Johnson, was a Baptist preacher from Virginia who married Eleanor Madden, the daughter of a house slave and an Irish Catholic planter. James and Eleanor had 11 childrensix sons and five daughters. Thomas Nelson Johnson, their youngest son, was Ralph Bunche's grandfather, a teacher who graduated from Shurtleff College in Alton in 1875. One of his students was Lucy A. Taylor from Sedalia, Missouri, born March 10, 1855. The daughter of a house slave and an Irish planter, she married Thomas Nelson Johnson on September 8, 1875. Lucy and Thomas Johnson's second child, Olive, was Ralph Bunche's mother. She was born in Kansas on April 3, 1882. In 1890 Thomas suffered an attack of malaria which killed him, and Lucy Johnson, with no job and five children, sold everything in order to have enough money to return to Alton, Illinois. In 1900 Lucy Johnson moved her family from Alton to Detroit into a white house with green shutters and a large front porch. This is the house where Ralph Bunche was born.

Named in honor of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize winner, the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute NSF RENEWS RBSI FUNDING APSA is pleased to announce that the NSF has renewed their financial support of the RBSI for an additional three years through a grant to Duke University. The program, under the direction of Professor Paula D. McClain at Duke University, is supported by both the Cross-Directorate (Research Experience for Undergraduates) and Political Science Programs at NSF. Read more about this grant. (RBSI) is a five week, academically intensive summer program designed to simulate the graduate school experience, provide mentoring, and expand academic opportunities for African American, Latino/a, and Native American students. For over a decade, the Institute has helped talented minority students between their junior and senior year of college excel and go on to graduate school, many with full fellowships and teaching assistantships. At least nine former Bunche students have earned Ph.D's and now hold university level teaching positions in political science. Over 40 Bunche graduates are working on or have completed a master's degree. A number of RBSI students have also won prestigious fellowships including the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, the Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, the APSA Minority Graduate Fellowship, and other awards and fellowships within individual institutions.

Ralph Bunche Summer Institute
Designed to introduce 20 students to the world of graduate study and encourage applications to Ph.D. programs in political science, the heart of the Institute is two transferable credit courses, one in quantitative analysis and one in race and American politics. The courses introduce students to the intellectual demands of graduate school and political science research methods. As a final project for both courses, students prepare original, empirical research papers and top students are given the opportunity to present their research at APSA's Annual Meeting, with all expenses paid by the Association.
RALPH BUNCHE Classes are held on the Duke University campus, where students have access to a fully equipped computer laboratory, library collections, and other university facilities. Educational activities range from formal classroom settings to informal dinners and lunches with prominent political scientists and other Duke University faculty. A strong ethics component is included with readings, cases, debates, and lectures on issues within an academic setting. RBSI Director Paula McClain, professor of political science and law at Duke University, teaches classes along with other colleagues from major universities. Bunche students have uniformly praised the exceptional mentoring that they receive from Dr. McClain and other Bunche faculty.

Eleanor Roosevelt and Ralph Bunche
You were there and watched Eleanor Roosevelt at work in these efforts [in establishing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights]. How would you characterize her?
The Declaration was an extremely important milestone in human civility. We haven't got there yet, but it's made an extraordinary difference to the way in which people behave already. Another American that you observed and worked under and who made quite an impact was Ralph Bunche. Tell us a little about him.
I suppose he's the greatest friend I ever had in my life and also my mentor for most of the years I was in the UN. He was an absolutely extraordinary person and again, someone who now seems to be shamefully forgotten.
A World View of Race in 1936, which made the parallel between colonialism and racism in the United States and analyzed the underlying motivations for each. They were very important works at the time. He also did a major study of colonialism in Africa, which was quite an unusual subject in those days. He also began a major study of the non-white population of South Africa, and he was six months in South Africa doing that. But then he became the chief assistant to Gunnar Myrdal, a Swedish social economist who was commissioned by the Carnegie Corporation to write a book on the race problem in the United States. The book was An American Dilemma which is a landmark in the writing about this subject.

A barber's son, Ralph Bunche was born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 7, 1904. His parents died when he was 13, and his maternal grandmother took Ralph and his young sister to live in Los Angeles. Bunche attended the University of California at Los Angeles on scholarships and graduated in 1927. He earned a master's degree at Harvard University in 1928 and a doctorate in government and international relations at Harvard in 1934. His doctoral dissertation won the Tappan Prize as the best one in the social sciences that year. Later he did advanced work in anthropology at Northwestern In 1949, Ralph Johnson Bunche (1903-1971) successfully negotiated armistice agreements between Israel and four neighboring Arab nations. For this outstanding feat, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The global reach of his work can be seen today in the peacekeeping strategies and operations which he created as United Nations Under-Secretary General. Dr. Ralph J. Bunche biography
Biography of Ralph J. Bunch, first African American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Undersecretary of the United Nations, and peace negotiator for world crises in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Ralph Johnson Bunche was born on August 7, 1904 in Detroit, Michigan. Bunche's family was poor and his father moved from city to city looking for work. Ralph attended Barstow School in Toledo, Ohio and sold newspapers to add to the family income. Bunche would later recall that, "My childhood days were poor days, but happy ones and filled with music." Ralph's mother died when he was thirteen years old, after which his maternal grandmother reared him. Ralph attended Jefferson High School in Los Angeles. He experienced racial prejudice when he was not allowed admittance to the Ephebain Socity, the citywide honor society. He was so upset that he wanted to quit school. He did not quit and graduated from high school in 1922 with academic honors. Ralph's grandmother encouraged him to continue his education. After graduation, he entered the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). At college Ralph participated in athletic and social activities. He was on the staff of the college newspaper, the "Daily Bruin," and sports editor of the college yearbook. bodyOffer(20580) Although he worked part-time jobs to help pay for his college expenses, he excelled in his subjects. He majored in political science and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the most prestigious honor society in the U.S. In 1927, Bunche graduated from UCLA with the highest honors.
