    Biographical Information
East Wind, West Wind was published in 1930, while she was still living in China. She followed that book with the Chronicles of the Family Wang, The Good Earth Sons (1932), and A House Divided (1935). It was The Good Earth that first brought Pearl Buck to the attention of the world, winning her the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howell Medal. After her divorce in 1935 from John Buck, Pearl married her publisher, Richard Walsh, and the couple moved to Green Hills Farm in Bucks County, PA. From here, Pearl Buck would write more than 100 more books before her death in 1973. Her work brought numerous awards and recognitions, including the honor of becoming the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (1938). Pearl Buck was more than just an author, even a great one, though. In her lifetime, she was recognized as a noted humanitarian, particularly concerned with the rights of women and children. She founded Welcome House, Inc., an international agency set up to promote the adoption of Asian-American children, now part of the Pearl S. Buck International Foundation, an organization "committed to making the world a more humane place for its children by promoting the appreciation and understanding of other cultures through education, adoption, and support." She used her work to bring attention to the inferior status of women in traditional China. Because of her experiences with her daughter Carol, whose story is told in

by Jewde I was in High School when her book, "The Good Earth", was mandatory reading. Since then I have read everything she has written many times over. She gave me my first glimpse of the common demoninators of humanity. As a person of faith, I began to understand the soul searches of each of us as humans and could relate to the daily struggles of people a continent apart. Far ahead of any of us in the "Feminist Movement", yet not labeled as such. A woman of depth, strength and so aware of the struggles not only in relationships but the storms of life we all face.
Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker was born on June 26, 1892 in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Her parents were missionaries in China where she spent most of the first forty years of her life. In 1910 enrolled in Randolph-Macon Woman's College, graduated 1914. Married John Lossing Buck in 1915 and lived in an impoverished province in China where she gathered the material she would later use in her novels and writings. Her first child, Carol, born in 1921 was profoundly retarded. She taught in universities in both China and the U.S. There is now a Foundation in her name to celebrate her life and works and children from underdeveloped countries are still being helped. Following are excerpts from two speechs she made.

Three Daughters of Madame Liang (Buck, Pearl S. Oriental Novels of Pearl S. Buck, 4th,) > Customer Review #1: A family divided by the Cultural Revolution

"The Three Daughters of Madame Liang" was Pearl S. Bucks last major novel and it holds its own with the best of her work. In Madame Liang, Buck has created a fascinating character, a woman who is very much her own person. After doing the very un-Chinese thing of leaving her husband when he takes a concubine, which he claims is his right because his wife has produced no son, Madame Liang determines to make her own way in the world and opens a gourmet restaurant that caters to the high and mighty of the Peoples Republic (even good Communists appreciate good food). She has not only survived, but thrived, by keeping a low profile and providing her customers with the best. But she has sent her three daughters, Grace, Mercy and Joy, to America to be educated; and now, after many years separation, Grace has been called home by her government to serve the new society.

East Wind: West Wind (Buck, Pearl S. Oriental Novels of Pearl S. Buck, 8th,) > Customer Review #1: Insightful and romantic...

This was a quick and easy read told in the first person through the eyes of a Chinese woman. Also its clear that the writers own loyalty to the Western thought of romantic love is all over this story. It is this notion that ultimately drives the narrator to give up her old ways and accept the new. Buck describes how difficult it is for one to accept change in age-old rituals. Although many of the traditions are seen as unnecessary, foolish or just plain sadistic, its difficult to question them after growing up in a culture where these traditions have been practiced for thousands of years. The narrator is a good vehicle to show how upsetting, confusing and frustrating it can be to incorporate these changes into ones life. Time and time again the theme of the generation gap is revealed, showing how many people simply cannot be changed.

Buck (1892-1973) - original surname Sydenstricker; pseudonym John Sedges One of the most popular American authors of her day, humanitarian, crusader for women's rights, editor of Asia magazine, philanthropist, noted for her novels of life in China. Pearl S. Buck was awarded the Nobel Price for Literature in 1938. The decision of the Swedish Academy stirred controversy, especially among critics who believed that Buck lacked the stature the Nobel Prize was intended to confirm. Nowadays Buck's books are generally considered dated although attempts have been made to rehabilitate her work. "One does not live half a life in Asia without return. When it would be I did not know, nor even where it would be, or to what cause. In our changing world nothing changes more than geography. The friendly country of China, the home of my childhood and youth, is for the time being forbidden country. I refuse to call it enemy country. The people in my memory are too kind and the land too beautiful." (from A Bridge for Passing Pearl Buck was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia. She spent her youth in China, in Chinkiang on the Yangtse River. She learned to speak Chinese before she could speak English. Her parents were missionaries. Buck's father, Absalom Sydenstricker, was a humorless, scholarly man who spent years translating the Bible from Greek to Chinese. Her mother, the former Caroline Stulting, had travelled widely in her youth and had a fondness for literature. Buck's life in China was not always pleasant. When she was only a child, the family was forced to flee from the rebel forces of the Boxer Rebellion.
