Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, 1892 - 1973
Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker was born on June 26, 1892, in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Her parents, Absalom and Caroline Sydenstricker, were Southern Presbyterian missionaries, stationed in China. Pearl was the fourth of seven children (and one of only three who would survive to adulthood). She was born when her parents were near the end of a furlough in the United States; when she was three months old, she was taken back to China, where she spent most of the first forty years of her life. The Sydenstrickers lived in Chinkiang ( Zhenjiang ), in Kiangsu (Jiangsu) province, then a small city lying at the junction of the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal. Pearl's father spent months away from home, itinerating in the Chinese countryside in search of Christian converts; Pearl's mother ministered to Chinese women in a small dispensary she established. From childhood, Pearl spoke both English and Chinese. She was taught principally by her mother and by a Chinese tutor, Mr. Kung. In 1900, during the Boxer Uprising, Caroline and the children evacuated to Shanghai, where they spent several anxious months waiting for word of Absalom's fate. Later that year, the family returned to the US for another home leave. In 1910, Pearl enrolled in

Pearl Buck was born in Viginia in the United States but became both a missionary and teacher in China and strove to improve Chinese-American relations. Her works include reflections on both American and Chinese thinking and she established the Pearl S Buck Foundation to assist illegitimate children born of U.S. servicemen and this foundation became the benefactor of most of her income.
The House of Earth Trilogy included the The Good Earth for which she received a Pulitizer Prize (1932) which was later adapted for stage and screen. This was followed by Sons and A House Divided . She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938, which was not expected by either herself or her critics who considered that it was justified by the commitment to promoting peace and idealism. She wrote several novels about Chinese peasants and biographies about her parents as missionaries in China - The Angel and The Exile . She also published short stories and wrote about her retartded daughter in The Child who Never Grew . Using the pseudonym John Sedges she published several novels of a different naure including The Townsman

Boston Transcript One need never have lived in China or know anything about the Chinese to understand it or respond to its appeal.
    The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature
Novel by Pearl Buck, published in 1931. The novel, about peasant life in China in the 1920s, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1932. The Good Earth follows the life of Wang Lung, from his beginnings as an impoverished peasant to his eventual position as a prosperous landowner. He is aided immeasurably by his equally humble wife, O-Lan, with whom he shares a devotion to the land, to duty, and to survival. Buck combines descriptions of marriage, parenthood, and complex human emotions with depictions of Chinese reverence for the land and for a specific way of life.
Ingram A classic novel by a Nobel Prize-winning author offers a graphic view of China during the reign of the last Emperor, and tells the story of an honest farmer and his wife as they struggle with the sweeping changes of the twentieth century. Reissue.

    The Good Earth
"I am comforted by life's stability, by earth's
unchangeableness. What has seemed new and
frightening assumes its place in the unfolding of knowledge.
It is good to know our universe. What is new is only new to us." Hello and welcome to my literary page dedicated to The Good Earth , a novel written by the Noble Prize-winning author Pearl Buck. Buck grew up in China with missionary parents. Her simplistic style makes the novel easily accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of people. In other words, you don't have to be a graduate student in English to appreciate this novel.
This novel, despite the simple manner in which it was written, deals with some very complex themes, among them, feminism. The following is an excerpt from a research paper I wrote as an undergrad at Eastern Illinois University entitled "The Feminist in Pearl Buck and The Good Earth ."
Upon first reading, The Good Earth appears to be a very anti-feminist novel. Many of the female characters are either slaves or prostitutes, not even remotely equal to the men in the novel. They all appear to be extremely uneducated and rather accepting of the idea that men are in control. But is Wang Lung, the main male character, really in control? A closer reading of the novel reveals that, while many of the decisions are made by Wang, they are greatly influenced by the female characters. In many ways, the women give direction to Wang's life. Despite their lowly position in society, these women each have some sort of power over Wang that makes him need them as much as, if not more than, they need him. The absence of Wang's mother, who has the potential to be a very strong influence on her son, forces him into the rather feminine position of caring for his father. Placing Wang in this domestic setting is a manifestation of Buck's idea of putting men in the house.

Buck (1892-1973) - original surname Sydenstricker; pseudonym John Sedges One of the most popular American authors of her day, humanitarian, crusader for women's rights, editor of Asia magazine, philanthropist, noted for her novels of life in China. Pearl S. Buck was awarded the Nobel Price for Literature in 1938. The decision of the Swedish Academy stirred controversy, especially among critics who believed that Buck lacked the stature the Nobel Prize was intended to confirm. Nowadays Buck's books are generally considered dated although attempts have been made to rehabilitate her work. "One does not live half a life in Asia without return. When it would be I did not know, nor even where it would be, or to what cause. In our changing world nothing changes more than geography. The friendly country of China, the home of my childhood and youth, is for the time being forbidden country. I refuse to call it enemy country. The people in my memory are too kind and the land too beautiful." (from A Bridge for Passing Pearl S. Buck was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia. She spent her youth in China, in Chinkiang on the Yangtse River. She learned to speak Chinese before she could speak English. Her parents were missionaries. Buck's father, Absalom Sydenstricker, was a humorless, scholarly man who spent years translating the Bible from Greek to Chinese. Her mother, the former Caroline Stulting, had travelled widely in her youth and had a fondness for literature. Buck's life in China was not always pleasant. When she was only a child, the family was forced to flee from the rebel forces of the Boxer Rebellion.
