How Cells Control Cholesterol Our research is directed at unraveling the mechanism by which the SREBP pathway regulates cholesterol metabolism at the molecular, cellular, and whole body levels. The mechanism by which sterols control the proteolytic release of SREBPs from cell membranes is being elucidated through studies of cultured animal cells. The in vivo role of the SREBPs is being studied in transgenic and knockout mice.

7. Michael S. Brown - Biography
michael S. brown – Biography. michael S. brown was born on April13, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest child of Harvey brown
http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1985/brown-bio.html
Michael S. Brown was born on April 13, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest child of Harvey Brown, a textile salesman, and Evelyn Brown, a housewife. His sister Susan was born three years later. When Brown was 11 years old the family moved to Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, where Brown attended Cheltenham High School. An amateur radio operating license obtained at age 13 led to a life-long fascination with science. A serious interest in journalism also developed early. These two passions, science and writing, have remained paramount ever since.
Brown graduated in 1962 from the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Pennsylvania, with chemistry as his major subject. He spent most of his time at the headquarters of the student newspaper, the Daily Pennsylvanian, where he served as features editor and briefly as editor-in-chief. In 1966 Brown received his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In 1964 he married Alice Lapin, a companion from childhood. The next two years were spent as intern and resident in Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Here Brown met

Brown, Michael S.,
in full MICHAEL STUART BROWN (b. April 13, 1941, New York, N.Y., U.S.), American molecular geneticist who, along with Joseph L. Goldstein , was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their elucidation of a key link in the metabolism of cholesterol in the human body. Brown graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1962 and received his M.D. from that university's medical school in 1966. He became friends with Goldstein when they were both working as interns at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston during 1966-68. After conducting research at the National Institutes of Health from 1968 to 1971, he became an assistant professor at the Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, where he was reunited with his colleague Goldstein. In Dallas the two men began their collaborative research on the genetic factors that are responsible for high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. They compared the cells of normal persons with those of persons having familial hypercholesterolemia, which is an inherited tendency to get abnormally high blood cholesterol levels and, as a result, atherosclerosis and other circulatory ailments. Brown and Goldstein were able to trace a genetic defect in the afflicted persons that resulted in their lacking or being deficient in cell receptors for low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which are the primary cholesterol carrying particles. Their research established that these cell receptors draw the LDL particles into the cells as a prelude to breaking them down, and thus remove them from the bloodstream. The two men also discovered that the cell capture of such lipoproteins inhibits the further production of new LDL receptors by the cells, thus explaining how high-cholesterol diets overwhelm the body's natural capacity for withdrawing cholesterol from the bloodstream.

At least, that's what it seems like when I wake up in a cold sweat at 3 o'clock in the morning. We moved in knowing that there had been foundation problems, but we were under the impression that those problems had been fixed in 1990. We have all the paperwork from both the original engineer who diagnosed the problem and the foundation repair contractor who "fixed" it. Piers were installed about every 4 feet all along the eastern and northern perimeters. But apparently they were installed poorly because the house is still settling. About two years ago we called the original engineer to come back out and reassess the house. He's pretty sure the house was never leveled when the piers were installed. And of course the contractor who installed the piers is no longer in business (at least not in Texas). And apparently he owes this engineer money too because when I made the appointment the engineer said, "If you find him, tell him we're looking for him." Here's the scoop: This area of Austin is covered in black clay. Black clay is alive. When it rains, it swells. When it's dry, it shrinks. The engineer described it to me using his notebook. He bent the edges up and down and said that the outer edges of the house are moving up and down like this with fluctuations in ground moisture. Right now, the northeast corner of the house has settled more than the rest of the house. It's not much, probably 1.5" to 2" which doesn't sound horrible when you consider that that's over a span of 30 feet or so (about an inch every 15 feet), but that's enough to cause doorjambs to skew to the point that doors no longer open or close properly. It also cracks the walls. There isn't a single wall in my house that isn't cracked.

Kite Aerial Photography When I was a teenager, I thought it would be really great to mount a camera on a kite and take aerial photographs. That was over twenty years ago when the art and science of kite flying was not developed to the point it is today. Back then, the kites I flew cost under fifty cents and were small diamond shape designs consisting of two pine sticks covered with a thin sheet of plastic or newspaper. Now days there are specialty kite shops selling kites made of colorful nylon sailcloth and framed with exotic graphite or fiberglass spars. Things have definitely come a long way. Internet Resources for Kite Aerial Photography Information In the spring of 1996, I was exploring the Internet and discovered Charles Benton's excellent Kite Aerial Photography web site. Looking at his site made me remember and consider again my teenage idea of putting a camera on a kite. This source provided me with the inspiration I needed to get started. Soon, I was taking some interesting pictures of my backyard and neighborhood . You can see more of my kite aerial photographs at the bottom of this page. A Basic Kite Aerial Photography System Kites The basic components of a kite aerial photography system include: a big kite, kite line, a winder or spool for the line, a camera mount, a camera, and some sort of trigger system. Although many people prefer to build their own kite, camera mount, and control equipment, I thought it would be more convenient to purchase commercial off-the-shelf equipment.

I can just hear the pitch for Enough in my head. "It's Double Jeopardy except the scorned wife gets martial arts instead of firearms training!" "It's Sleeping with the Enemy if Julia Roberts were packing a hidden can of whoop-ass!" And, indeed, Enough delivers on exactly what such pitches promiseincluding being a pretty atrocious movie. There's no denying, however, that Enough 's climaxwhich is revealed in every aspect of the ubiquitous marketing campaignis one huge crowd pleaser. When victim-no-more Slim (Jennifer Lopez), newly buffed and trained in the Israeli martial art known as Krav Maga, finally stands up to her abusive, adulterous creep of a husband Mitch (Billy Campbell) and straight up bitchslaps him, it's difficult to resist the urge to clap. But this isn't necessarily due to the audience's identification with and sympathy for Slim and her plight; it's more because after tormenting the audience with such painfully forced and over-the-top villainy, one can't wait for Campbell to get his just desserts for crimes against acting. To be fair, Campbell is just one characteristic cog in the horribly unsubtle machinations of
