Herbert Charles Brown (born May 22 ) is a chemist who won the Nobel Prize in 1979 (along with Georg Wittig ) for his work with organoboranes. Brown was born Herbert Brovarnik in London to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants. He moved to the US at a young age and was educated at the University of Chicago , earning a BS and Ph.D in 1936 and 1938 respectively. He became professor at Purdue University in 1947, a position he still holds emeritus. During World War II , Brown discovered a method for producing sodium borohydride (NaBH ), which can be used to produce boranes , compounds of boron and hydrogen . His work led to the discovery of the first general method for producing asymmetric pure enantiomers Brown is quick to credit his wife Sarah with supporting him and allowing him to focus on creative efforts by handling finances, maintaining the house and yard, etc. According to Brown, after receiving the Nobel prize in Stockholm , he carried the Medal and she carried the $100,000 award. edit

It is generally regarded as the supreme commendation in the world today. The prizes were instituted by the final will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist, and the inventor of dynamite. He signed his will at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris on November 27, 1895. He was shocked to see how his invention was used for destructive purposes and wanted the prizes to be awarded to those who served mankind well.

http://www.nobel.se/chemistry/laureates/1979/brown-autobio.html
My parents, Charles Brovarnik and Pearl Gorinstein, were born in Zhitomir in the Ukraine and came to London in 1908 as part of the vast Jewish immigration in the early part of this century. They were married in London. In 1909 my sister, Ann, was born. I arrived on May 22, 1912. In June 1914 my father decided to join his mother and father and other members of his family in Chicago, much to the dismay of my mother, whose own family largely remained in England. My grandfather's name had been anglicized to Brown, and that became our name. In the United States, my two sisters, Sophie and Riva, were born in 1916 and 1918.
My father had been trained as a cabinet maker, doing delicate inlaid work. However, he found little market for his skills in the U.S. and turned to carpentry.
The Depression of 1920 persuaded him to go into business and he opened a small hardware store in Chicago at 18th and State Street, largely a black neighborhood. We lived in an apartment above the store and I attended the Haven School at Wabash and 16th Street with predominantly black classmates.
I did well in school and was advanced several times, graduating at 12. Indeed, I was offered, but refused, further advancement since I did not want to be in the same class with my sister, Ann.

H erbert and Sarah Brown have spent their career dedicated to discovering new science, new people and new ideas. They met in 1932 at Crane Junior College, Chicago, but it closed in 1933. They continued their education in 1934 at a newly-opened Wright Junior College, where upon graduation in 1935, Sarah inscribed a note in Herb's yearbook , " To a future Nobel Laureate ."

April 28, 2003 Public chemistry lecture features Nobel laureate Herbert C. Brown By Shawna Williams
Nobel laureate Herbert C. Brown will give the third annual Joseph F. Bunnett Research Organic Chemistry Lecture at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 2, in the University Center. Brown's talk, entitled "The Discovery and Exploration of a New Continent of Organic Chemistry," is free and open to the public. Herbert C. Brown shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with German chemist Georg Wittig of the University of Heidelberg. Photo courtesy Purdue University The R. B. Wetherill Research Professor Emeritus of chemistry at Purdue University, Brown is most famous for his pioneering work with boron compounds, which revolutionized synthetic organic chemistry.
While working for the Department of Defense during World War II, Brown found a way to make sodium borohydride. This compound opened a new path for making hydrogen gas, used in weather balloons during the war and in fuel cells today. This was the first of many important reactions made possible by boranes, compounds of boron and hydrogen.
Boranes, which Brown has called "possibly the most useful intermediates currently available," are now used in the synthesis of many organic compounds, including medications such as the antidepressant Prozac and the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor.

Unfortunately, my father became ill of some sort of infection and died in 1926. I left school to work in our store. I am afraid that I was not really interested in the business and spent most of my time reading. My mother finally decided that she would attend the store and I should go back to school. Accordingly, I reentered Englewood in February 1929 and graduated in 1930. At Englewood I ran the humor column of the school paper and won a national prize. I never recovered. We sold the store at that time. I had no hope of going on to college. However, this was the beginning of the Depression and I could find no permanent job. Studying appealed to me much more than the odd jobs I could find. I decided to go to college. I entered college intending to major in electrical engineering. I had heard that one could make a good living in that area.
