Every individual ought to know at least one poet from cover to cover: if not as a guide through the world, then as a yardstick for the language. A language . . . is a more ancient and inevitable thing than any state. A poet is a combination of an instrument and a human being in one person, with the former gradually taking over the latter. The sensation of this takeover is responsible for timbre; the realization of it, for destiny. If a poet has any obligation toward society, it is to write well. Being in the minority, he has no other choice. Failing this duty, he sinks into oblivion. Society, on the other hand, has no obligation toward the poet.

Brodsky, Joseph Homage to Chekhov
Genre Poem Keywords Family Relationships Human Worth Sexuality Society ... Survival Summary This is a generous and good-natured pastiche of a narrative poem evoking a "typical" Chekhov story and crowded with many of Chekhov's favorite images, settings, and situations. It begins: "Sunset clings to the samovar, abandoning the veranda, / but the tea has gone cold, or is finished . . . . " In the country house, Varvara Andreevna, Maximov, Dunia, Erlich, Kartahov, and Prigozhin (the doctor) carry on their ordinary business in the "oppressive midsummer twilight . . . . " Does Varvara Andreevna love the doctor? Does Erlich love Natalia Fiodorovna? Is anything going to happen? The poem ends: "In the provinces, too, nobody's getting laid, / as throughout the galaxy." Commentary An affectionate satire that might be entitled "the essence of Chekhov" or "pulling Chekov's leg." Also, an extremely well-structured six stanza, 48-line, poem (written in English) by one of the great Russian poets of the 20th century.

Brodsky, Joseph
Joseph Brodsky was born in 1940, in Leningrad, and began writing poetry when he was eighteen. Anna Akhmatova soon recognized in the young poet the most gifted lyric voice of his generation. From March 1964 until November 1965, Brodsky lived in exile in the Arkhangelsk region of northern Russia; he had been sentenced to five years in exile at hard labor for "social parasitism," but did not serve out his term.
Four of Brodsky's poems were published in Leningrad anthologies in 1966 and 1967, but most of his work has appeared only in the West. He is a splendid poetic translator and has translated into Russian, among others, the English metaphysical poets, and the Polish emigre poet, Czeslaw Milosz
On June 4, 1972, Joseph Brodsky became an involuntary exile from his native country. After brief stays in Vienna and London, he came to the United States. He has been Poet-in-Residence and Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan, Queens College, Smith College, Columbia University, and Cambridge University in England. He currently is Five College Professor of Literature at Mount Holyoke College. In 1978, Brodsky was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters at Yale University, and on May 23, 1979, he was inducted as a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1981, Brodsky was a recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation's award for his works of "genius".

Northerner:
A Tribute to Joseph Brodsky
By Ruth Fung Exiled from his homeland of Russia in 1972, Joseph Brodsky emigrated and eventually obtained citizenship to the United States. He is best remembered as the Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1987, and Poet Laureate of the United States in 1991. Czeslaw Milosz, another Nobel Prize winning Poet, said of him, "Already since his beginnings and his trial in Russia the aura of greatness surrounded him."
'In a Room and a Half', Less Than One: Selected Essays
Purchase the Book A Room and a Half is the last essay in Joseph Brodsky's Less Than One: Selected Essays, dedicated to the 'memory of my mother and father', and it is small extracts of this that will punctuate the rest of this article. It wasn't a monumental work - not in the sense of the 'philosophical quest' with which critics might be concerned. But it was characteristic of the way he wrote; in the words of Yevgeny Rein, it gave one the sense of how 'time flows past and away from you; and time knows neither heat or cold'.
And it is this distinctive style of his that gives an added poignancy to A Room and A Half, because it isn't just any essay. It is a biography by the poet himself on his life and those he left behind in
