Nobel laureate, alumnus Shull, dies at 85
April 19, 2001 Dr. Clifford G. Shull, the NYU alumnus who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1994 for his work with neutrons, died on Saturday, March 31 in Medford, Mass. He was 85. Shull was honored with the Nobel Prize for developing a technique to probe the molecular structure of materials by bouncing neutrons off them. The technique Dr. Shull developed, neutron scattering, is widely used by scientists examining things as different as superconductors and viruses. His work was of considerable significance to the development of the transistor and the computer chip. Shull shared the Nobel Prize with Dr. Bertram N. Brockhouse, an emeritus professor of physics at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, who had independently worked on the problem. Born in Pittsburgh in 1915, Shull was educated at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and New York University, from which he received his doctorate in physics in 1941. He recalled NYU fondly for his scientific work there - "We graduate students were encouraged at an early stage to join and help in one of the half-dozen or so ongoing research projects within the department" - and because he met his future wife there, Martha Nuel-Summer. After World War II, Dr. Shull joined what is now Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. There he worked with the late Dr. Ernest O. Wollan, exploring how neutron patterns could be used to supplement those obtained with x-rays or electrons. Physicists had earlier used X-rays to probe materials, but neutron scattering was the first technique able to detect the position of hydrogen atoms and to measure magnetic fields around atoms. Shull later said he regretted that Wollan's death, in 1984, precluded his sharing the Nobel with Brockhouse and himself, "since his contributions were certainly deserving of recognition."

Tue Oct 14 16:20:08 CDT 2003 Dear Friends and Colleagues; It is with deep regret that I inform you that Prof. Bertram N. Brockhouse passed away yesterday in Hamilton, Ontario. As you know Bert was a heroic figure in the development of neutron scattering as a technique to study materials at a microscopic level. His invention of the triple axis neutron spectrometer and the "constant-Q" technique for inelastic scattering allowed the first detailed determination of the dispersion relations for spin and lattice vibrations in solids. These in turn allowed for a detailed microscopic understanding of the forces present between atoms in materials, and for the nature of atomic motion in solids. He was recognized for these achievements at the highest level, culminating with the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics, which he shared with Cliff Shull of MIT. Further details on Bert's life can be found at: http://www.physics.mcmaster.ca/people/fs3_people_Brockhouse_BN.html

Statement by Nobel Laureates on the occasion of the one-hundredth anniversary of the Nobel Prize
December 11, 2001 Introduction 110 Nobel Prize Winners Look Ahead
On the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. Dateline Stockholm; December 11, 2001 The attached Statement was released as 150 Nobel Laureates gathered in Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway, for an unprecedented celebration marking the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. (The prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Economics meet in Stockholm where their prizes were awarded, and, correspondingly, the Peace Prize winners meet in Oslo.) In brief, the Statement warns that the world may explode into war if modern weapons continue to spread, and environmental strains remain unchecked. It stresses that we shall not have enduring peace until we address the twin scourges of poverty and oppression, and calls for a new sense of global responsibility. It hardly need be said that the signatories make no claim to oracular status, but offer their views as a group of concerned citizens.

MIT PHYSICIST SHARES NOBEL FOR ANALYSIS OF MATTER WITH NEUTRONS

METRO CAMBRIDGE One of the first researchers to find a peaceful use for nuclear power, Clifford G. Shull of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will share this year's Nobel Prize in physics for discoveries so basic that some colleagues had feared his accomplishment was being taken for granted. During the first decade after World War II, Shull, 79, harnessed the shower of neutrons produced in a nuclear reaction to analyze the atomic structure of solids and liquids. Shull's neutron scattering technique paved the way for a host of modern discoveries, from plastics to better computer memories to biological tests. "I'm really happy they finally discovered his work. With something as fundamental as this, it's easy to forget who discovered it," said a Nobel laureate, Jerome I. Friedman of MIT, who, along with MIT's dean of science, Robert J. Birgeneau, nominated Shull for the physics prize this year. Also yesterday, the Swedish academy of science announced that University of Southern California scientist George Olah has won the 1994 Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Seven Nobel Prizes from BES-Supported Research Since 1986, seven Nobel Prizes have been awarded to ten principal investigators (in bold) for their BES-supported research.
The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2003
was awarded jointly to three physicist, Alexei A. Abrikosov (Argonne National Laboratory), Vitaly L. Ginzburg (P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute, Moscow), and Anthony J. Leggett (University of Illinois, Urbana) "for pioneering contributions to the theory of superconductors and superfluids." Their contributions to the theory of superconductors and superfluids have yielded deep understanding of physical phenomenon that were once both mysterious and perplexing to the scientific community. Through their efforts, tremendous strides are being made in understanding these processes, leading to the development of new superconducting materials and technologies that have great promise to benefit the entire world. BES has supported Dr. Abrikosov as part of the Materials Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory since 1991, where he has worked extensively on the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity.
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1997
was awarded to three biochemists
