For his work he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1946. solids under pressure (which included the discovery of high-pressure forms of ice), and measurements of the physical properties of solids (such as electrical resistance). As the range of pressures was extended, new and unexpected phenomena appeared; thus he discovered that the electrons in cesium undergo a rearrangement at a certain transition pressure. Although Bridgman did not himself synthesize diamonds, despite repeated attempts, his experimentation led directly to their eventual synthesis by scientists of the General Electric Company in 1955. Many other minerals have been synthesized by the adoption and extension of his techniques; a new school of geology, based on experimental work at high pressures and temperatures, developed from his endeavours.

Abstract: The collection contains the professional papers of Percy Williams Bridgman (1882-1961), Nobel laureate in physics, whose chief contributions to physics were in the area of the effects of high pressures on materials and their thermodynamic behavior. The papers consist chiefly of professional and research material.
Biography of Percy Williams Bridgman
Percy Williams Bridgman (1882-1961), was a physicist. His contributions to the field concern the effects of high pressures on materials and their thermodynamic behavior, contributions that would not have been possible without the equipment, particularly a seal, that he invented himself. He also contributed to crystallography, electrical conduction in metals, and the philosophy of modern physics. He was a Nobel laureate in physics (1946) and recipient of many other honors. He earned his Harvard AB 1904, Harvard AM 1905, and Ph.D. 1908. He joined the Harvard Faculty in 1908, was appointed Instructor (1910) and Assistant Professor (1919), before becoming Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy in 1926. He was appointed Higgins University Professor in 1950. Bridgman published more than 260 papers and 13 books. He took his own life in 1961, rather than dying of the cancer with which he had been diagnosed.

Bridgman, Percy Williams
US physicist. His research into machinery producing high pressure led in 1955 to the creation of synthetic diamonds by General Electric. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics 1946.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he was educated at Harvard, where he spent his entire academic career.
Bridgman's experimental work on static high pressure began in 1908, and because this field of research had not been explored before, he had to invent much of his own equipment; for example, a seal in which the pressure in the gasket always exceeds that in the pressurized fluid. The result is that the closure is self-sealing. His discoveries included new, high-pressure forms of ice.
His technique for synthesizing diamonds was used to synthesize many more minerals and a new school of geology developed, based on experimental work at high pressure and temperature. Because the pressures and temperatures that Bridgman achieved simulated those deep below the ground, his discoveries gave an insight into the geophysical processes that take place within the Earth. His book Physics of High Pressure 1931 still remains a basic work.
