Jahrhunderts die Geschicke seines Heimatlandes maßgeblich; zwischen 1906 und 1932 war er nicht weniger als 19 Jahre lang Regierungsmitglied, darunter fünfmal Ministerpräsident. Vor allem seine außenpolitischen Leistungen können gar nicht hoch genug eingeschätzt werden und trugen ihm im Jahre 1926 gemeinsam mit Gustav Stresemann den Friedensnobelpreis ein. Als Außenminister von 1925 bis 1932 arbeitete Aristide Briand gemeinsam mit dem deutschen Politiker intensiv an einer deutsch-französischen Annäherung im Rahmen einer europäischen Gesamtlösung, ohne jedoch das ausgeprägte französische Sicherheitsbedürfnis zu mißachten. Resultate waren u.a der Locarno-Pakt (1925) sowie die Rheinlandräumung (1930), wobei Deutschland als Mitglied dem Völkerbund beitrat. Der Franzose erlangte aber vor allem durch den gemeinsam mit Frank Billings Kellogg ausgearbeiteten und nach ihnen benannten Briand-Kellogg-Pakt internationale Anerkennung. Dieser am 27. August 1928 geschlossene und später von insgesamt 63 Nationen unterzeichnete Vertrag geißelte den Krieg als Mittel zur Lösung internationaler Streitigkeiten und verpflichtete die Unterzeichner zum Verzicht auf militärische Aktionen. Lediglich militärische Sanktionen des Völkerbundes oder Verteidigungskriege wurden als legitim anerkannt; der Geist dieses Vertrages ging später in die Satzung der UNO ein.

He was born at Nantes , of a bourgeois family. He studied law , and soon went into politics, associating himself with the most advanced movements, writing articles for the anarchist journal Le Peuple , and directing the Lanterne for some time. From this he passed to the Petite Republique , leaving it to found L'Humanit© , in collaboration with Jean Jaur¨s At the same time he was prominent in the movement for the formation of trade unions, and at the congress of working men at Nantes in 1894 he secured the adoption of the labour union idea against the adherents of Jules Guesde . From that time, Briand became one of the leaders of the French Socialist party. In , after several unsuccessful attempts, he was elected deputy. He declared himself a strong partisan of the union of the Left in what is known as the Bloc , in order to check the reactionary deputies of the Right. From the beginning of his career in the chamber of deputies, Briand was occupied with the question of the separation of church and state . He was appointed reporter of the commission charged with the preparation of the law, and his masterly report at once marked him out as one of the coming headers. He succeeded in carrying his project through with but slight modifications, and without dividing the parties upon whose support he relied.
