Notable lumanaries in the history of the University

Ferdinand Redtenbacher is considered one of the founding fathers of mechanical engineering in Germany. Carl Weltzien initiated the construction of the first chemical laboratory, which was exemplary in its time. In 1860 he organized the first International Chemistry Congress in Karlsruhe. Mechanical engineering professor Franz Grashof made major contributions to establishing the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) , the Association of Engineers. Important contributions in the field of petroleum research came from chemist Carl Engler Carl Benz (1844 - 1929), one of the pioneers of the automobile, studied in Karlsruhe and received an honorary doctorate from the University in 1914. Physicist Ferdinand Braun (1850 - 1918) developed the Braun tube in 1897, an invention that served as the picture tube in television sets, oscilloscopes and display units. In 1909 he and Guglielmo Marconi received the Nobel Prize for Physics for this work. Physics professor Otto Lehmann (1855 - 1922) invented the heating stage microscope and was a pioneer in researching liquid crystals.

http://www.nobel.se/physics/laureates/1909/braun-bio.html
Karl Ferdinand Braun was born on June 6, 1850 at Fulda, where he was educated at the local "Gymnasium" (grammar school). He studied at the Universities of Marburg and Berlin and graduated in 1872 with a paper on the oscillations of elastic strings. He worked as assistant to Professor Quincke at and in 1874 accepted a teaching appointment to the St. Thomas Gymnasium in Leipzig. Two years later he was appointed Extraordinary Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Marburg, and in 1880 he was invited to fill a similar post at Strasbourg University . Braun was made Professor of Physics at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe in 1883 and was finally invited by the in 1885; one of his tasks there was to build a new Physics Institute. Ten years later, in 1895, he returned to Strasbourg as Principal of the Physics Institute, where he remained, in spite of an invitation from Leipzig University to succeed G. Wiedemann. Braun's first investigations were concerned with oscillations of strings and elastic rods, especially with regard to the influence of the amplitude and environment of rods on their oscillations. Other studies were based on thermodynamic principles, such as those on the influence of pressure on the solubility of solids. His most important works, however, were in the field of electricity. He published papers on deviations from Ohm's law and on the calculations of the electromotive force of reversible galvanic elements from thermal sources. His practical experiments led him to invent what is now called Braun's electrometer, and also a cathode-ray oscillograph, constructed in 1897.

Search Inventors Karl Ferdinand Braun By Mary Bellis The first cathode ray tube scanning device was invented by the German scientist Karl Ferdinand Braun in 1897. Braun introduced a cathode-ray tube with a fluorescent screen, known as the cathode-ray oscilloscope. Braun, a German physicist shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909 with Guglielmo Marconi for the development of wireless telegraphy . He demonstrated the first oscilloscope (Braun tube) in 1897, after work on high frequency alternating currents. Cathode-ray Oscilloscope
The cathode-ray oscilloscope is an electronic display device containing a cathode-ray tube (CRT), used to produce visible patterns that are the graphical representations of electrical signals. Karl Ferdinand Braun
Though Karl Ferdinand Braun shared, with Guglielmo Marconi, the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics for achievements in wireless telegraphy, he is rarely remembered for that honor. He is better known for building the first cathode ray tube (CRT), or "Braun tube" as it is still known in Germany, in 1897.

Braun, Karl Ferdinand
German physicist who made improvements to Guglielmo Marconi' s system of wireless telegraphy; they shared the 1909 Nobel Prize for Physics. Braun also discovered crystal rectifiers (used in early radios), and invented the oscilloscope 1895.
Braun was born in Fulda, Hesse, and educated at Marburg and Berlin. He held academic posts at a number of German universities, ending his career as professor and from 1895 director of the Institute of Physics at Strasbourg.
In an attempt to increase the radio transmitter range to more than 15 km/9 mi, Braun devised a system in which the power from the transmitter was magnetically coupled (using electromagnetic induction) to the antenna circuit. He patented this invention 1899, and the principle of magnetic coupling has since been applied to all similar transmission systems. Later Braun developed directional antennas.
In 1874 Braun discovered that some mineral metal sulphides conduct electricity in one direction only. These were later used in the crystal radio receivers that preceded valve circuits.
