(6. èervna 1850 – 20. dubna 1918) Nobelovu cenu získal v roce 1909 spoleènì s G. M. Marconim za velké zásluhy o rozvoj bezdrátové telegrafie. Nìmecký fyzik Carl Ferdinand Braun se narodil v roce 1850 jako šestý syn soudního úøedníka. Studoval na univerzitì v Marburku a Berlínì, kde u fyzika H. L. F. Helmholtze obhájil doktorskou disertaci. V roce 1874 se stal øeditelem gymnázia v Lipsku, pùsobil na univerzitách v Lipsku, Štrasburku, Karlsruhe. Již jako dvacetiletý provádìl výzkumy v oblasti oscilace a vedení elektrického proudu v elektrolytech. V pozdìjších letech se zabýval mechanickou teorií tepla a naukou o elektøinì. Vypracoval teoretické základy Le Chatelierova principu pohyblivé chemické rovnováhy. Základní Braunovy práce pocházejí z oblasti radiotechniky. V roce 1874 Braun objevil usmìròovací úèinek polovodièù, který se pozdìji stal základem pro objev tranzistorového efektu (Nobelova cena za rok 1956). Mezi jeho nejvýznamnìjší práce patøí konstrukce trubice s katodovými paprsky z roku 1897, která je v elektronice známá jako Braunova trubice. Byl tvùrcem krystalového detektoru, jehož základem se stal jeho objev unipolární vodivosti v roce 1906 a který se užíval v prvních letech rozhlasu. V roce 1898 sestavil uzavøený obvod, který se spoleènì s Braunovou trubicí stal základem bezdrátové telegrafie, a nechal si patentovat tzv. Braunùv vysílaè. Pro usmìròování pøenosu elektromagnetických vln navrhl použít nìkolika vertikálních paralelních antén.

Bessel (1784-1846) was an astronomer and mathematician known best for the functions bearing his name; the Bessel functions of first and second order appear on this German stamp. Bessel was the first to measure the parallax of a star (Cygni 61) in 1838, thus making it possible to calculate its distance. Observing the motions of the stars Sirius and Procyon, he deduced that each was orbiting around another, dark star. These dark stars were later found to be white dwarfs.

Part 5 - Karl Ferdinand Braun
by James P. Rybak Jim Rybak has contributed many articles on the early history of radio communications to The OTB. Previous parts of the present series have covered the work of Nathan Stubblefield (May, 1997), Dr. Mahlon Loomis (August, 1997), Fr. Joseph Murgas (November, 1997) and Charles D. Herrold (August, 1998). Jim's "Early Mechanical Detectors for Continuous Wave Wireless Telegraphy" appeared in the November, 1998 issue, and his two-part article "Reginald A. Fessenden and the Development of Radiotelephony" (November, 1996 and February, 1997) won the 1997 Bruce Kelley-OTB award. T hough Karl Ferdinand Braun shared, with Guglielmo Marconi, the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics for achievements in wireless telegraphy, he is rarely remembered for that honor. He is better known for building the first cathode ray tube (CRT), or "Braun tube" as it is still known in Germany, in 1897. The CRT has been cited as second in importance in the fields of communication and physics only to DeForest's audion in the fifty-year period that followed [1]. In 1909, the future importance of the CRT was not at all clear to the Nobel Prize Committee members. What was clear, however, was that wireless telegraphy already was profoundly changing the way the world communicated. It was for this reason that the Nobel Prize Committee recognized the separate, but equally important, complementary wireless telegraphy achievements of Braun and Marconi. While Marconi's accomplishments were more spectacular and much more highly publicized, Braun's achievements were no less important to the overall development of wireless telegraphy.

(Redirected from Carl Ferdinand Braun Karl Ferdinand Braun June 6 April 20 ) was a German physicist Born in Fulda. Educated at the University of Marburg and the University of Berlin , receiving his Ph.D. in 1872. In 1874 he discovered the point-contact rectifier effect. He became director of the Physical Institute and professor of physics at Strasbourg in 1895. In he built the first cathode-ray tube oscilloscope , the CRT is still called the "Braun tube" at the University of Karlsruhe , Germany. He also worked on wireless telegraphy from 1898, inventing the crystal rectifier and Guglielmo Marconi admitted to 'borrowing' from Braun's patents. In Braun shared the Nobel Prize for physics with Marconi for "contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy." Braun was detained while in America because of his German citizenship when the U.S. entered WWI in 1917. He died before the war ended in 1918.
